And here I have found in my book Die Reitkunst der Welt an den Olympischen Spielen 1936 by Gustav Rau, some photos of Baron Takeichi Nishi at the Olympics in Berlin 1936, where he participated with two horses in two equestrian disciplines, the Military with Ascot and Show-Jumping with Uranus.

Pat, I think the saddle on the web site may be an officers model. I think there was one recently for sale on Ebay. I have a Japanese saddle that the cantle spoon was removed. I will be glad to email you some photos of it. The saddle is simalar to A 25 but also different. The tree on the Japanese is smaller and construction is different. Like the 25 it does come apart. The Japanese model is a one piece combination seat and flaps/ The seat is not welted like the 25 but is simply sewn on top of it. I also have the original stirrups. The saddle I purchase had the flocking coming out of it so I just added felt panels to it. I am also in the process of redoing a 25 and have made to panels out of felt for it also. Tom

Several years ago Pat posted this print for me. I believe we were talking about mounted bowmen at the time. Anyway, I thought that this thread would be an apt place to reinsert it. It is a Japanese woodblock print executed in the19th c (I'm guessing).

Pat, I see the tanks have stars on them .... and I don't mean to get us chasing rabbits here, because the intended topic is interesting, ....... but Japanese tanks with stars? I'm not sure I've ever noticed that before.

Totally baffled me too, but I consulted with the experts, and the Japanese Army apparently painted yellow or OD stars on their tanks, if they were Army tanks. The Navy used the same, but with an anchor. As per the cap device.

If you look really carefully, there's a metal star up above the painted star.

I was also informed that these are Type 89 medium tanks.

Can you expand on that? I didn't realize the Japanese used cavalry in the Philippines during their occupation. What role did it play, counter insurgency? Policing?

Interesting observation. I had assumed they were heavy saddle packs, but they may in fact be horse with some sort of pack loads.

Japanese Cavalry saw service in platoon size strengths

Im not 100% that they belonged to Infantry regiments or not,Veteran acounts from Arthur K Whitehead(26th Cavalry) confirmed portee cavalry being used from 42 to 43

The Japanese riding addle could be packed in the same way with slung loads as per a mac or Packers saddle
