It's almost December. Any last minute military horse related gift ideas? Something on your wish list?
Know where I can get a decent Napoleonic cavalry figure, that I don't have to paint myself?

You might give these folks a try:

The last time I looked, they seemed to have a big selection of pre-painted figures in all scales. They're not cheap though. I've ordered other stuff from them and the service was good.

I suggested to my long suffering spouse that I could use a mule for Christmas.
The suggestion was not warmly received.

I suggested to my wife that a miniature horse would make a great companion for the dogs and help keep the grass trimmed in the back yard. That one didn't go over very well...

A lot of them are a pain in the rear to trim. I always feel so vunerable being on my knees next tothem since I'm never able to get away fast enough when there's a blow-out.I suggested to my wife that a miniature horse would make a great companion for the dogs and help keep the grass trimmed in the back yard. I always chuckle when people ask me if I am willing to charge half-price to trim a mini over a regular horse.

I always like books as gifts, and I figure a lot of folks here do as well. With that in mind, I'd note that Lou Dimarco's book War Horse is fairly recent, and a lot of folks here probably do not yet have a copy. It's a very nice book, and well illustrated. I think nearly anyone with our common interests would enjoy it.
Another book that some folks here might like would be Margaret Derry's book Horses In Society. It's a bit pricey, but very interesting.

I'll second the recommendation for Lou's book. I just finished reading it last month and have been meaning to post some further comments on it in the pertinent thread. I'll be sending a couple of copies to friends.

Whether by virtue or out of necessity that sounds frightfully dull, Dusan. In case of the latter I'm also recommending that everyone give copies of 'Arming and Equipping the US Cavalry, 1865-1902'. An informative text, lavishly illustrated, and handsomely bound, a must on every Christmas list this year!Trooper wrote:I'd just like everyone to know that I have been a very, very good boy this year.....

Fairly dull, but productive...
Bless you Sandy - hope Santa brings all your heart can desire.
I'll take this opportunity to be the first:
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New year to all!

I may have to get a copy of Lou's book. I did manage to find a copy of Riding with Reagan, in stock at Amazon.Pat Holscher wrote:I always like books as gifts, and I figure a lot of folks here do as well. Any last moment ideas?
Might I suggest "SWORDS AND SABERS OF THE ARMORY AT SPRINGFIELD" by Burton A. Kellerstedt. It can be a bit hard to find, but the gift shop at SPingfield Armory usually has a few in stock. It covers all the swords from pre-civil war through the M1913 and even includes a mention of a replacement for the Patton. Very detailed and very well written. He also includes a number of appendices for sword drill, both mounted and dismounted.
Another fine book for US enthusiasts is "THE SPRINGFIELD 1903 RIFLES" by William S Brophy. Pricey but a huge volume showing the research and development of the 1903 Rifle including a nice little section on the 1912 Cavalry equipment. Good read for a cold ong winter, as this one is looking to be.
Springfield Armory NHS usually has both books in stock and I also found used copies of both on Amazon.

PS- War Horse is an INCREDIBLE book. Even has the known stud registry in the back.

I wish for you all, in season, the joy of grandchildren such as I have received.
My latest, a fine healthy little boy, arrived just a little early for Christmas, making my wish list complete and all other presents unnecessary.
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New year to all.
