Mounted Police Today

George,
They are members of the State Police in anti-riot suits, although the horses don't carry the full anti riot dress (including eye screen for example), so neither Carabinieri, nor municipal Police (police forces are somewhat complicated in Italy...). Anyway mouted patrols are usually dressed in a little more scenographic way, especially in the centre of cities like Rome or Florence.

Very interesting, David. Big horse. I have only known a couple who were that big (excluding the show draft horses like Clydesdales).

Wow, that's a big horse.

Of course, at 5'7" they are all tall to me. But were I assigned that police horse, I think it would tax my abilities to mount up.

Is the State Police a national level police? Could it be the Italian equivalent of the Spanish Policía Nacional (National Police)? They have local police forces (autonomic) and the Guardia Civil, like your Carabineros.

Exactly George,
It is the equivalent of the Spanish Policia Nacional. The Municipal Police has really little tasks which go little beyond traffic control and control of, say, unauthorized road or house works etc. (I mean they have less power than the police forces of Spanish Autonomias).

Guardia Civil can be seen as the Spanish counterpart of our Carabinieri, indeed.

German mounted police. These policemen were out in connection with the arrival of a train from France carrying nuclear waste, and were involved in removing protestors, today, November 9.

During the last days of Howard AFB in the Republic of Panama, the USAF Security Police officers took to patrolling the perimeter on horseback. There were at least 2 officers and 2 horses.

When they closed Howard AFB, the horses were sent to Little Rock AFB in Arkansas where they still have a mounted patrol. I don't know if the Howard horses are still in use.

Hello folks, I assume that you're aware that Chile is the host of the APEC meeting this year, President Bush is coming for a few days, and also President Vladimir Putin. (I won't mention the Chinese guy, nobody elected him)

Well, horses will be part of the show of force of our beloved "Carabineros", police is everywhere during these days and in my trip to the office I passed 3 teams of mounted police officers just where the second picture was taken. I had no camera, I was in a hurry to get to work and it is a high speed expressway so I should've cause a wreck if I had stopped.

I live about 5 to 10 minutes in the direction that the 2 SUVs are heading and that is the highway that comes from the airport to the upper part of Santiago, so all the VIPs will be coming this way, so the mounted carabineros will be patrolling the hills that overlook the road.

They do look sharp, what with their riding boots, M1912s, and feldgrau uniforms.

What type of unit are those troops in? I think I see a light red stripe on their trousers, but I'm not sure.

A question that the more knowledgable on uniforms might know. These uniforms are clearly patterned on the Germans ones, of course, but does that color approximate the WWI or pre WWI German uniform in shade? The WWII variant is really a muted green. It seems to me that some WWI German uniforms were also a shade of green, but a person will run across references to slate gray, and I've always wondered if it was actually used, or more of a parade ground color.

I wholeheartedly agree with pat about the unifroms. I have always been amazed at how sharp the German uniforms looked. They may have lost both wars, but boy did they look good doing it...

And, I too, see a red stripe on the legs of the breeches. I would love to know more about these guys.
