Great stuff Pat, thanks. I don't have time to watch the whole ten minutes but I will this evening. Anyway, off hand I'd guess that these are shots taken at the great cavalry school at Tor d' Quinto, in the teens, twenties, so these may be soldiers from a variety of nations. Riding down the steps was a tradition at the school. Maybe Luigi can confirm or correct my hunch.

I found another version of this film, with some of the same footage, in the Pathe archives, with the troopers said to be Portuguese.

Aha, Portuguese. We once had a serving Portuguese cavalry officer active on this site. He posted pictures of guys galloping down stairs that looked exactly like the ones in the film. It was some kind of graduation test run. I now think they were the same stairs.
