That photo was taken at a very odd angle. It appears as though it's a midget policeman and a midget horse.

Here's some shots I took in London last year of mounted police

http://travel.webshots.com/photo/141906 ... 0353RKRTQr
and Life Guards:

I included the link if you want to see the tack in greater detail, as Webshots only will let me post thumbnails. I thought the "rain skirts" (not sure what the term is for them) were interesting. Nice quality animals.

I had to share this link: http://www.olympiahorseshow.com/show/metvideo.htm
An amazing mounted police demo. And my drill team thought we were pretty fancy doing that manoeuver without the flaming hoops!

I'd be interested to know from anyone who has ridden a police mount on pavement extensively... if in fact you had rubber shoes, or steel, or both...and what you thought.
From a purist standpoint, any horse I've ever seen shod with rubber shoes...the feet look terrible..all torn up...I would attribute this to the fact that rubber shoes cannot be shaped properly, and therefore not nailed properly...this, plus the fact that these shoes are "givey", tear the feet up...when these shoes are glued on, they don't last more than a week or so from what I have seen.
Before rubber shoes, when horses were ridden on slippery surfaces, we would braze borium on the toes and heels...this, being extremely hard, would dig into the pavement and give the horse traction...
From what I understand, cities don't want their streets dug up anymore, and have gone to these rubber composites now.
My view is that these rubber shoes really have no place except maybe for this application... traction, for extensive street use...The "reduced concussion" advertising aspect of these shoes, in my view, is nonsense. After all, a horses leg , below the knee, is one big shock absorber, and they can travel 100 miles in one day over lava rock, and have no "concussion" issues.
I would think that a torn up foot would be easier managed than constant wrecks from falling horses.
Also, one of the police threads, an officer mentions that these rubber shoes are in fact slippery on wet, oily, pavement.
Any thoughts?

We had a horse in the stables which developed sore knees. The vet blamed it on the girl fitting her horse with rubber shoes. He said that they did not provide stable support. In a similar way, one particularly slushy winter I wore rubber galoshes a lot and ended up with very sore knees too.
Interesting.

Berlin Mounted rescued from disbanding
BERLIN - German Interior Minister Otto Schily ushered in a new era in law enforcement on April 8, when he welcomed seventy members of the Berlin mounted police unit, twelve grooms, and two blacksmiths to the federal border guards, the Bundesgrenzschutz, or BGS. But many residents of Berlin, which is also a federal state, say the German government's gain is the German capital's loss. After more than fifty years patrolling the city's streets and wooded parks, the 44-horse squad's beat is now restricted by constitutional and federal law to federal government property - airports, train lines, and buildings like the presidential palace and Reichstag.
Police officers and the public are less than satisfied with the change. The officers have lost their familiar beats. The city residents will miss mounted patrols in Berlin's 45,000 acres of parks and forests.

Great photos. I wish I could see more of the saddles. Check out those knee rolls.

I think those saddles are the Stubben Scout. They have the majority of the European Mounted Police in them. I can't say for certain but all indicatations point to that model.Originally posted by John Fitzgerald

The Belgian National Mounted Police tested them and accepted them, there was a rapid move to that saddle by European agencies then.
