I thought that I might share my painting as it progresses here, a ww1 British Cavalry horse, Ypres

This is neat. I like the horse. He reminds me of a Thoroughbred that I once owned. I've got some questions and input on the saddlery and kit, but I wonder if this thread might get a little better exposure if it was moved to the "UP Forum".
On the kit: what is the box below the rider's butt? Also, is that supposed to be a holster on his belt? There must be a ton of photos on the UP forum showing the British cavalryman of the Great War.

I wonder if the article of kit to which Brian refers is the water bottle. It is on the correct side although a little low. As to the possibility of a holster, revolvers were not generally issued to troopers except for specialists.

Not sure about that "box". It should be smaller and hang under the trooper's arm, if it is a waterbottle. And yes, there does seem to be a holster. It looks like an M1916 US holster! A British Other Ranks (EM's) holster was open topped and worn cross draw fashion. Officers' flap holsters could be worn on either side, but cross draw was usual in the cavalry.
Perhaps the artist will set us straight?

Thanks for the input, the reference photo appears to have been based on a British infantry officer Mons 1914 on a captured German horse hence the weird array of kit, the painting has progressed a little bit since....
