I found this footage on YouTube tonight, and thought I'd post it. It was shot near Camp Hale, Colorado in 1956 and shows the 4th FAB., along its horses and mules. Pack howitzers are seen being loaded on mules. There was another pack unit at Hale or Carson which was the 35th QM Company (Pack). They both were deactivated or dismounted at the end of that year.

Unfortunately the watermark and meter get in the way, but so be it:

It was only A Battery of the 4th that was pack at this stage, B and C Battery exist only on paper.

Great footage and nice to see the pack units sporting some of the 51 cold weather uniform.

Note the guy on the white mule is carrying a .45 Cal Submachine Gun, M-3 (Grease Gun).

That's pretty cool! (I love the grease gun!)

Sam posted the M3 photo before, and he did a blow up of it as well. If I recall correctly, it's just affixed to the saddle via a string or strap. Clearly a Jerry Rigged type of deal.

I'm surprised to see a M3 at all in a pack unit.

In the close up it is just the sling looped over the horn.

I will try and find the tighter scan.
