Re: US Horse Equipment Trials in 1850s

That is what I was coming up with, also. When, exactly, did the Grimsley’s go out of service and the McClellan go into service as an artillery saddle. Some of the heavy artillery units were still using Grinsley’s as late as 1900. Don’t know where I got that information, though. There are 1890’s phot...

Todd,

How close is the saddle in the Cowan’s Auction photograph to the Federal ranger saddle?

Germans watching U.S. Army kitchen going through Treves, Germany, December 1, 1918.
I think that is a ‘Taylor’ model rolling kitchen. Note there are four horses pulling this somewhat light load.

Will someone please enlighten me as to what ‘CoH’ means? It is a term with which I am not familiar.

Re: The 30th Division in the Querrien Area, October 23 - November 19, 1918

That funny, stiff-legged walk in WWI films is due to the number of frames per second taken by the camera not being the same as the number of frames the projector is projecting. Philip Sauerlender has a projector that compensates of that and it makes a great deal of difference in the quality of the v...

Some of the reviewing officers seem to be riding McClellans.

Some of the troops are carrying Lewis guns.

This presentation is in dire need of some of Philip’s projector magic.

Re: Third Battalion 13th Regiment Heavy Field Artillery, Fourth Division, in rest camp on hillside near Andelot. 155-mm.

The problem was that the loads were getting too heavy for the horses to handle. The 4.7-inch Guns and 155mm Howitzers were just about the limit of what horse traction could handle. 155mm guns, 21cm howitzers and 240mm howitzers took a great deal more tractive power than horses were capable of provid...

Re: Third Battalion 13th Regiment Heavy Field Artillery, Fourth Division, in rest camp on hillside near Andelot. 155-mm.

155mm Howitzers, Model of 1916. Transportation was eight horses pulling the howitzer and a limber, and eight horses pulling the two caissons, one of which served as the limber. These were converted to pneumatic tires and air-brakes after WWI and were still in combat service in WWII. They were still ...

Re: RE: US M1918 Caisson for the "French 75mm"

This is the only effort at camouflage prior to WWI that I have ever seen. They are trying to make it difficult for the observer to determine exactly what he is seeing. http://www.starforts.com/gr/monroe/lincolngun.jpg The Lincoln Gun, the first 15-inch Rodman Gun, mounted at Fort Monroe during the U...

Re: RE: US M1918 Caisson for the "French 75mm"

Several years later we were at a firepower demonstration and I had my crew at the position of ‘At Ease,’ waiting for the thing to start. In the Civil War enlisted saluted with the hand farthest from the officer and palm outward like the French. I heard someone shout my name and I turned around and ...

Re: RE: US M1918 Caisson for the "French 75mm"

Our city has a couple of these M1918s that they've moved to a frontier era reconstructed fort on the edge of town, but which they have repainted some years ago to sort of a mustard like color, which I'm told was the correct color for them. It's sort of an odd location for them, but it works okay as...

Good story Couvi. I like it. This is a link for the page of original photos of the M1918 Limber and Caisson: http://www.lovettartillery.com/US_Artillery_Vehicles_Ph.html Notice that all of the wartime era photos show the limber, caisson, and gun with the two color camouflage and the 1927 photo take...

Re: RE: US M1918 Caisson for the "French 75mm"

I was trying to prompt you to recount it. Well, if you insist! Well, this was in the time when the old souls roamed the earth, and the was Chief of Staff at Fort Sill and the Post Commander were crazy. The Post Commander wanted to take a couple of reproduction Civil War cannon and shoot them for th...

Sorry Couvi I should have said a little more. Because the team are working at a slower pace that of walk, this method of marching was adopted to keep the pace of the team. It works very well and, it helps to add to the circumstances and reverence to the funeral..]

It is very elegant.
