Re: Number of spare horses or remounts a cavalry unit would
I don't know if you've read Freemont's report to congress on his expedition to western Wyoming in 1842, but it might be of some use to you. I don't recall him addressing your particular question but his report is rich with details of daily life on the trail in that part of the country, including the...

Re: Stalin
Thanks for the recommendation. I recently read Pares' "A History of Russia" and was struck by his sins of omission and have been looking for something else to fill in the gaps in his narrative. On another note, and I know of no supporting evidence, but I've always suspected that Prokofiev ...

Mounted Potii, PMs, et al
I thought we already had a thread devoted to American presidents who rode but couldn't find it. Perhaps it was buried in another topic. Here is a short passage from William H. Seward's biography of John Quincy Adams: "When in the Presidency, he sometimes made a journey from Washington to Quincy...

Re: Death's Head and Cavalry units
Reading Bernard Pares' "History of Russia" over the weekend has entailed spending almost as much time with an atlas and google as it has in actually reading the book itself. Anyway, on one of those side trips this photo of a white Russian popped up and I was reminded of this thread. Kornil...

Re: McClellan saddles?
YOu know, there must be an obscure reason why, although there were half as many artillery saddles, and in as much as artillery saddles were actually used in the way while the cavalry didn't do much riding in that war, the artillery saddles seem to turn up more frequently than the cavalry-rigged one...

Re: German cavalryman shooting
Shooting while standing on the horses back was no standard training feature. It was done by a few troopers to show the high training level the remounts had reached. Standard training was firing a pistol mounted, but no rifle or smg shooting from horseback. Regards Tom Yes, of a kind with jumping je...

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse
I took this photo in Payson, Utah last year. Though not as early as some of the replacements featured above ,this old 6-by is still in service. It is used to transport and store pipe and tools for a landscaping/paving outfit. I like the logo on the driver's door.

Re: M1928 McClellan conversion
No metal, if you mean the galvanized banding one often sees on western bent wood stirrups. I don't know that that is never the case but the few that I have seen have been bare wood under the hood.

Nice photos. Looking at some of them I hear Yosemite Sam saying "Whoa there. Whoa, I say whooahh..."
Looks like fun though. I say, bring it back to the Winter O's. Announce the new
category of competition, say, six months before game day. Shake things up a bit.

Ahhh, that hook. The little bent metal clasp. I'll guess that it retains the lash. It doesn't appear to be substantial enough to be a hanger for the whip. But I dunno.
