Re: 1885 Nosebag

NICE! The proportions are visually perfect on that saddle - I’ve never seen that level of work in miniatures before. I believe 1885 was earliest printed reg describing leather ventilator. It may have been in limited use before that, in some form or other, but I’ll let more knowledgeable pe...

Re: Civil War McClellan

I would guess that the information about the timing of his brevet and his leaving the service / resigning his commission really tells the tale as to when this rig was acquired and used. He was brevetted Major General of Volunteers in October 1864 and resigned his commission on June 28, 1866. The bre...

Re: Civil War McClellan

This looks like a lovely piece - was the general a brevet major general during the war? The double stars arranged in vertical fashion are interesting. As far are determining wartime vs. postwar use, with common McClellan gear that might be nigh impossible to gather from the physical artifact. Postwa...

Re: Would this be the same 'Sam Walker'?

Hi Todd I do not know the answer but what might be of interest are extracts of letters from Sam walker to Sam Colt , these are from the book Sam Colt's Own Record 1847. From Sam Walker to Sam Colt 18th April 1847 New Orleans Barracks. I have 160 men and am still recruiting for the Regiment and have...

Re: Interesting CW Photos from the Library of Congress

Thanks! I love browsing that collection, but just wasn't able to find this particular image. Got it now. I've had the same experience lately - I don't know if they changed it or not, but the collection as a whole seems to be continually expanding...slowly, but more there than there used to be. I've...

Re: Interesting CW Photos from the Library of Congress

I've been looking through the LoC website, and I can't locate this image. Is there some additional identifier that I'm missing? Title: [Private Levi F. Hocker of Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, in uniform with pistol and sword, on horseback] http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/civwar/...

Looks like that snap was actually a piece of heavy wire - which means it really is just an adapted wagon bearing chain.

Am I seeing a curb chain safe?

Re: Interesting CW Photos from the Library of Congress

What is that log chain attached to? I believe it's a trace chain from a qm/army wagon - it's snapped into the halter ring, and a close-up looks like the other end is that quick-connect piece you see in wagon pics. Looks like it's tucked in the top of that thing he's got his Remington stuck in - 3/4...

Re: Civil War saddle tree makers tags or plates

For what, exactly, were the inspectors and sub-inspectors looking for? What were the parameters of their authority? Things that I'd love to find! Some of these 'later' circulars are referring to earlier ones dated in late 1862, and a couple in '63 - for which I've not yet been able to find. Key det...
