Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

Fuel update.

Diesel and Petrol here in the UK now down below £1 per litre - that would translate to around $4.50c per gallon though. Enjoy while you can

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

It'll be fine Pat, diesel and petrol here in the UK are now not far above £1 per litre, but nobody is celebrating yet. Of course transporting horses in diesel horse boxes is a lot cheaper than it was a couple of years back. :D

Park it over there and try not to frighten the horses ...

You really couldn't pull that with a team, could you?

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

Not very.

Very solid, heavily built, but that's it. Look at the height difference required to get a front axle drive under it - quite noticeable.

I'm seeing one 4 x 4 Quad just to the right of the split but don't recognise the rest.

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

The Ural ( and I think the Chang Jiang) are direct copies of captured german BMWs. I would imagine most parts would interchange at the assembly level, though I expect the original German ones would be better made and better finished. Both those countries had a great need for this sort of transport, ...

Ural from Russia, about $3750 or thereabouts which is the right price.

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

Like most countries the Germans started WW2 with horses and motorcycles, and they did make exceptional quality motorcycles. I believe the Chinese ( Chang Jiang ) made these BMW copies too. They were ( are ) just very good bikes, as popular today as in the 1930s. The US could supply every US / allied...

That's nice Pat, but ....

I seem to remember Russia was making those BMW combinations until the 1970s. I think there are a lot more Russian copies than originals

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

Double-checked, ran the numbers, almost exactly US$ 10 per Imperial gallon, which I'll admit is a hair larger than the US gallon. 80% is tax, so the actual cost of fuel is about $2 per gallon here, plus taxes. Of course that impacts on horse costs too, as they all have to be hauled around, and Vet's...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

Not me Pat, as a reality check the cost of petrol ( gasoline ) or diesel here in the UK is approximately US $ 10 per gallon equivalent, so make the best of it. As an oil person I'm not complaining as although consumption is being depressed by the prices there's no lack of investment yet to keep me i...

Re: War Horse

Afternoon all,

I've not seen the film, but I expect the transport was as accurate as the horse stuff.

If you wan't some idea of how much money they spent on the tank copy, which apparently appears only for moments, have a look at the video;

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

The nice people at the American Truck Historical Society took a look at it and came up with a definitive answer; -------------------- Everyone who said QMC take a bow. Brian Kelly was the 1st to get this, and all of Bill White's info is right on the money also. This behemoth is a 1932 QMC Group V 10...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

Morning Pat, and everyone.

I'm guessing QM Corps Standard Fleet - unfortunately there just isn't enough there for me to nail it down.

I might try the ATHS for this, they are quite good on these things.

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

I think they saw a lot of use, Pat, but don't have any figures.

I think the airborne scooters were only used in their intended role in Europe, howver I think they were used extensively as admin runabouts, and all the air bases and so on had the little package carts.

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

I'm liking the little Cushman Airborne and Package Cart, Pat.

You don't have to feed them, and if they get sick you can fix them when you get round to it.
