Re: Armeesattels before the 25

Another guess could be as follow: in the western saddle, in the piquet (renaissance) saddle and in the "english saddle" along with most "working saddle" you seat actually "on" the bars only separated by rawhide and some stuffing material. On these saddles instead you seat on an "hammock" like seat ...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25

Is this saddle close to the old Italian military pattern?

Yes Pat, quite close it is. The saddle was adopted early at beginning of XX sec. (1912 IIRC) and is also known as "Sella del Frate" ("del Frate" saddle) from the officer who designed it, Settimio del Frate. It should be a variation to an ...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25

I think Bocksaddle is the same like "sella a basto"
I dont know the "sella a basto". Do you have a foto or link where I can watch it?
The Bocksattel is no Packsaddle but the trees of both are maybe the same principe.

Horrido!

Nicole

"Basto" is a Packsaddle like the ones used on mules. "Sella ...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25

I think Bocksaddle is the same like "sella a basto" for us Italians which roughly translates to "Packsaddle".

If you look at the drawing of the trees posted, you see those massive threes which go well above the withers, with big arch and cantles like they were packsaddles. The Italian "Scafarda" is ...

A good one on the German Army is Cooper's "The German Army: 1932-1945" (I think that's the title). Cooper dispels much of the myth surrounding the "Blitzkrieg" tactics of the WWII German Army, arguing that it's tactics were much less armor based, and much less competent, than generally believed ...

Yes Joseph, there is, in fact the author is British and appeared in english first, then it has been traslated into Italian.

May I suggest an interesting read?

I just finished reading the Italian edition of "Amedeo. A True Story of Love and War in Abyssinia" (ISBN : 8817870293) by Sebastian O'Kelly.

This book follows an older and less known "La Guerra Privata del Tenente Amedeo Guillet" (the private war of Lt. Amedeo Guillet) by Vittorio Dan Segre (1993 ...

I hope you won't find it annoyng that I always make reference to Italian stuff, hope you won't think I'm an ultra-nationalist [:D] it's just that I think for the majority of you it might add an "exotic" touch or, after all, another angle of perspective, slightly different.

This long premise to give ...

For the German officers, I think it also depend on what kind of task they are carrying out. In Italy you can see mounted police in normal dress when patroulling parks or city center like in Rome or Florence, even with sabre attached to the saddle, or, dressed in anti-riot suits when it comes to more ...

I found your post really interesting. Your horses must be really accoustomed to almost everything!
What kind of "hardware" (saddle, bridle a.s.o.) are used in service? U.S. military kind, english, western?

I hope they were instructed thorougly before being issued with such weapons, I mean not only in handling them but also and above all in the rules of engagement.

Well, I rather think that showing such weapons has the main purpoise of generating a (false) sense of safety and of being protected in the ...
