Re: The Long Gray Line

I know I'm dating myself, but I remember that movie from childhood. I'll be sure to watch it.

"Keep 'Em Rolling"

I happened to catch this old 1934 movie, starring Walter Huston. It is about an artillery driver and his horse. It takes place during and after WW 1. It shows artillery teams in action and on the parade ground. It also has some cavalry footage. The details of uniforms, saddles, tack, and harness is ...

Great photos. I wish I could see more of the saddles. Check out those knee rolls.

Looking at the photo of the disassembled saddle, I noticed the attachment of the girth billets. The attachment is similar to the way the '04 stirrup leather hanger is attached. It seems like it would be easy to make that modification to an '04. That solves the webbing procurement problem and would ...

Bob,

I remember reading (perhaps here) an excerpt from a soldiers diary, describing the big charge at Beersheba. He told it in a way that was very exciting. Perhaps Pat could find that thread. Anyway, he said thousands.

I always enjoy watching the Aussie charge. Though it is a little skimpy when one thinks of the thousands that made the real charge

Notice the halters are over the bridles. I always wondered why the M1904 halter was so large. Now it makes a little more sense.

I tried the one rein stop. It's pretty effective. My horse didn't like it real well though.

I'm presently reading this book. However, I'm not to the actual combat yet. I like the author's style. I'll let you all know how the movie version measures up.

Doesn't he have awfully short stirrup leathers? I ride with my leathers as long as possible and still be in my heels. I find that way the best for a good grip at speed over rough terrain. Am I doing it wrong?

Killing horses is an emotional thing for me. I just hate it. I usually get pretty drunk afterward. We have a young gelding that has a serious stifle injury resulting from a bad wreck. The vet says he'll never recover. The rider was injured too. His time (the horse) draws near and I dread it.

There is a third season in the works, but they are being real quiet about when it's going to start. It's disgusting and facinating at the same time. Being the uneducated bumpkin that I am, I always watch it.

Raoul Walsh was the director. I'm not that smart, I had to look it up. The cast includes Tyrone Power Sr. as the wagon boss. He was a big burly guy who looks nothing like Tyrone Jr. I'd have never guessed...............John
