I can't believe this gem of a book has escaped me all these years, it's in its 14th printing.
First published in 1964, it is chock full of anecdotes, wit, wisdom, history, and humor, regarding the American West, horses and pioneers.

I laughed when that soldier in the first movie stepped on that horse's foot because it didn't pick it up fast enough. Good size heel caulks on that horse, and interesting hoof cleaning method.
The second movie is another example of my view that a "horse will carry anything", when it comes to shoeing ...

I like this last photo. The tight working area is a little surprising but it appears to be a spot they used regularly. Does anyone have any guess as to what the device with the coils, on the off side of the horse, might be?

Can't help but comment how these guys tie horses while underneath them.
First picture, horse is snubbed to a tree at a bad angle. How this horse can balance like this is beyond me.
Second picture, there are four stout horses tied to a toothpick hitching rail, very close together.

I'd be interested to know from anyone who has ridden a police mount on pavement extensively... if in fact you had rubber shoes, or steel, or both...and what you thought.
