Re: Day Of A Cavalry Trooper
Try a Google search for "daily log of garrison duties+US cavalry troopers". It's a long shot, but the United States Army and Navy Journal and Gazette of the regular and volunteer forces, Volume 21, 1883 - 1884, might be helpful. Many other digital copies of this newspaper format journal ar...

Re: British cavalry weapons in WWI
I don't want to mislead you into thinking I'm an cavalry officer or even a horseman - definitely not. I'm retired from both USAF and Union Pacific Railroad. I think I could identify the business end of a horse and probably stay in a saddle across a paddock, but that's about it. All my info came from...

Re: Austro-Hungarian stirrup leathers
Are these photos helpful? Not quite the same saddles, I know, but all were listed on the web sites where the photos were obtained as 1889 armeesattels. The only one where I'm fairly certain the leather stirrup straps are authentic and not a reproduction is the photo taken in a museum. German or Aust...

Try this web site for a discussion of Napoleonic period cavalry tactics. I read only a portion of it, but it seems to be about your subject. http://www.napolun.com/mirror/napoleonistyka.atspace.com/cavalry_tactics.html Other than that, unless you want to invest in military texts on the subject, I re...

I mispoke. The Hungarian or Honved army did not have lancers in their cavalry, so just looking for the proper colors and design for Austrian cavalry lance pennants in 1914.

1914 Austro-Hungarian cavalry lance pennant
Anyone have a photo or illustration or reference for an Austrian lancer pennant ca. 1914? Could the black and yellow pennant shown in one of Knotel's illustrations ca. 1859 be correct for 1914?

Re: Ottoman Turk (Great War period) saddles, etc.
I have photos of a rifle or carbine bucket in German colonial service. Some examples attached. Next a photo of a group of Uhlans [not colonial service] on patrol ca. 1914. This shows the rifle boot clearly. Fortunately the 1893 rifle shown is not part of my model-making, so not knowing the make and ...

Sometimes while stumbling around the web, you hit the jackpot (?). Maybe... Could the carbine in the bucket be an M1874 Gras Cavalry Carbine, the third one shown in the attached photo? greece2.jpg Text to go along with the photo. Re: Ottoman Turk (Great War period) saddles, etc.
Tom - My interest for making this miniature is 1915 - 1917. I'm attaching the best close-ups of the carbine in its boot or holster that I can make using Photoshop. These are from the 1893 photos. All the 1915 - 1917 photos and illustrations of Turkish cavalry that I can find show two versions of Mau...

I agree that the rifle bucket or boot is dodgy ca. WW1. I don't intend to make one for the German or Ottoman lancer miniatures.

Re: Ottoman Turk (Great War period) saddles, etc.
I found one set of files on the Library of Congress web site that may be useful. These photos were created 1880 to 1893 (so not exactly the right period) and concern the Turkish 1st Lancer regiment. Some horse equipment looks German (stirrups and the horse wallet on the NCO photo for example). Some ...

Ottoman Turk (Great War period) saddles, etc.
From the visual and text evidence I've gathered in web searches and from print, I gather that the Ottoman Turkish cavalry units of the First World War period were equipped largely with German or Austro-Hungarian saddles, saddle bags, bridles, etc. These were either provided to Turkey by their Centra...

SELewis - Many thanks for your thoughtful and detailed reply! Very helpful! The "horses and riders" miniatures project has grown to eight. I've added an Ottoman Turk cavalry lancer and a French Spahi, who will not be done as a lancer and will not have the same pose. I have a question about...

Re: Rider's Foot Position
Excellent response - thank you for taking so much time and effort! I'm actually working on a total of six 1/16th scale miniatures of lancers and riders. All six of the horses are rearing as though from being spooked. The lancers will be turning slightly in the saddle and stabbing with the lance held...
