Re: The sharpening of sabres

What kind of training would an enlisted trooper have received during the ACW in the use of the saber? What kind of training would an officer, particularly a non-West Point officer*, have received? By this time in American history the blade as a primary weapon was in serious decline, being strongly o...

Re: News Item: Incoming New York Mayor vows to end hansom c

The horse drawn conveyances referred to here don't seem to be Hansom cabs as we might know them from Victorian costume dramas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hansom_cab. In these cabs the driver sits behind the passengers. The NY conveyances appear to be rather more like a carriage of some descriptio...

Re: News Item: Incoming New York Mayor vows to end hansom c

I listened to an interview with a driver. He came across as very professional when it came to himself, his customers, and his horse. He was decidedly NOT "slick." I also listened to Hizzhonor. He came across as a loud-mouthed schnook.

"Quantity has a quality all its own." J. Stalin

The AK-47 family certainly certainly personifies this thought. As to the designer, one must give the Devil his due.

RIP.

Dreadnought: Britain, Germany, and the Coming of the Great W

I just finished a book entitled Dreadnought: Britain, Germany, and the Coming of the Great War by Robert K. Massie (author of Nicholas and Alexandria and Peter The Great). As the title suggests, it covers in great detail the relationship between Britain and Germany beginning with Bismarck’s unificat...

1912 UP Saddle

I'm interested in a reproduction 1912 UP saddle. Are there any U.S. based makers? If not are there any in the UK, Canada, Australia, etc.? The reason I'm looking for a repro is I want a riding saddle not a historical piece.

Any information would be appreciated. :)

Re: British Military Flintlock Rifles 1740-1840

This last weekend I did a display for the U.S. Cavalry Assn. at the Smokey Mt. Gun Collectors Assn. show in Knoxville. The next two tables on the aisle were flintlocks of mostly the late 18th-early 19th Centuries. Most were original, but some were replicas of mostly pretty good quality. One thing I ...

Re: Promotion of Jonathon Wainright (photo).

Looking at the photos there isn't much "slack" in the lanyard with the pistol holstered. That means that there's not enough slack for the trooper to assume the "book" position for firing. That's likely going to mean "I don''t like it" will be widespread.

Thanks for the input. I got the feeling it was "fluff" history. Nice to know others agree. I'ts going back home next Monday, unfinished. 8)

Imperial Cruise by James Bradley

The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War , by James Bradley. I'm about 40% through this book and am wondering if I should finish. I'd be interested in the views of anyone else who has read it. It's not a book on cavalry, but rather recounts a Pacific voyage of the SS Manchuria in 190...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equi

I agree that "speculation" has played a role in recent price increases, but this kind of speculation (buying up the product or contracts for the procuct) will only work in a market that is not well supplied. If there is an abundance of the commodity then this strategy is a short road to ba...

Re: Lanyards & the M1911

Thanks to all for the input on the M1911 Lanyard. I've started doing some leatherwork and may try my hand at "plaiting" a double-clip (a la the photo) just because it would be an intereting project. And it would justify buying a "lanyard ring magazine" for my 1911. Perhaps...

Re: Lanyards & the M1911

Brian and Pat make some interesting points. People were smaller in those days. I've seen and tried original lanyards and they were too short to properly handle an M1911, at least for me. I'm bigger than I ought to be, but even when one of my shorter and more svelte companions tried it he found it to...

Re: Lanyards & the M1911

Pat, there are two lanyards there. Is it comparing the two types, or it one for the mags and the other the pistol? Jim I believe the top item is a single lanyard with two clips. I concur. It looks like the "slide" is missing from the top item but it definitely has both clips. Thank you fo...

Re: Lanyards & the M1911

Thanks to all who responded, and to Pat for bumping up the earlier threads. Of course, now we have the critical question: does anyone have a photo, drawing, or detailed specification of the two-snap lanyard for the M1911? I note that there might be an example at Ft. Sill in the Museum. Any way to ve...

Lanyards & the M1911

I've followed a couple of discussions in other groups regarding lanyards and the M1911. One item that often surfaces is the use of a lanyard on an M1911 equipped with a magazine that has a lanyard ring. According to some, M1911 magazines had the lanyard ring as "standard equipment" until s...
