Prior to WW2 Washington was a small southern city. FL Ave was basically the city limits with rural land beyond. Many gov workers and army officers had estates nearby and took a short commute to work. The National Cemetery in Chattanooga has an impressive memorial to the Andrew's Raiders who participated in the Great Locomotive Chase of the General by the Texas. The Allegheny Arsenal in Pittsburgh made a large variety of items for the army in the Civil War. The Allegheny County Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall has on display a box containing the standard for Artillery buckles.
