Re: Posthumous CMH

That was definitely a different breed of men back then.

Have you ever wondered if Custer was prone to brazen errors trying to surpass his younger brother's fame, having been awarded 2 CHM's during the Civil War. But if you read Thomas' citations You might consider that they were both actually insane.

Re: Need help identifying a McClellan Saddle

You guys are good! Thanks for the help, and if anyone else has any of info I would love to hear it. You can't help but learn something researching these saddles. Are you looking at restoring it and keeping it for historical purposes, or are you thinking about trying to get it up and going and using...

Re: Need help identifying a McClellan Saddle

Hi and welome. While I am still learning, and may not be 100% correct, this looks like an M1904 McClellan given the russet leather covering the tree instead of the rawhide that was iconic of the 1859. Hope this helps, and anyone feel free to correct me if I'm incorrect.

The Cavalry School

Has anyone ever come across this before? While not crossing into the taboo of being considered "reenactment," this place claims to teach cavalry tactics of the 1870's and also offers packing courses for military and civilians. Just interested in your thoughts of how thorough or insightful ...

Re: Troop A,251st QM Sqn (In Australia)

IMO, it's not the whither location that is throwing you off optically, it's the fit of the saddle. My personal gear is all Aussie stock, and they tend to ride a little more forward, especially compared to Western saddles. There's a lot of compression padding under the tree towards the front that ma...

Samurai Horsemanship

Stumbled across this link while studying about the saddles and tack used in feudal Japan. Found it interesting that the actual "seat" of the saddle mimics an early variant of a McClellan. Is anyone familiar with what inspired the McClellan design? http://samuraiantiqueworld.proboards.com/t...

Re: Interesting Manual

PR; Welcome. I don't know of another book of the era, civilian or GPO issue, that covers such a broad range of material as "The Cavalry Horse and His Pack" does. It was written some years before the Ft Riley seat was codified and, so, reflects a style of riding that is closer to a good st...

Re: Interesting Manual

Does anyone know where to find a good reproduction copy of Wheeler's manual? Almost all of the ebay or amazon options show them from coming overseas. Didn't know if there were any places that sold it inside the US.

That's wild, gentlemen. The book is dedicated to The Society of the Military Horse by The Long Rider's Guild Press with this website down below it.

Re: cavalry machine gun squadrons

Philip, since you posted it, I'm hoping you may know; but in Drill Regulations for Machine-Gun Organizations Cavalry 1910, is there a good but of information on the tactics used by these units and and logistics needed to keep their animals up and going? And does anyone know, if anyone still offers t...

I looked for an introduction thread and came up empty. You know, oddly enough, even though this forum has been up for a very, very long time, we've never had such a thread. Maybe we ought to. Oddly enough, I don't think it's every occurred to us and you are the first to mention it, although they ar...

Re: 1912 U.S. Service saddle Punitive Expedition

Very nice work. I couldn't help but notice that a combination halter/bridle was being incorporated with the detachable bit. I own a few of these and was curious as to when this became popular and when these fell away from general use. I rarely see these in my region.

Re: Interesting Manual

What is interesting about this is that Philip St. George Cooke was ordered 3 years earlier to do just this very task, which his theory was not well received well by the Department of the Army. A year after McClellan's manual was printed the Department of the Army realized how talented Cooke actually...
