Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

Oh, another occurrence mentioned in the book came to mind. On one or several occasions a mission was scrubbed or members of the team sent back to base because of a horse losing a shoe. I think they solved the problem by sending a farrier with the troop on each stunt. A couple of horse shoes and a ha...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

I say "Bravo to the Greys" I think they are the prime example of what modern, innovative Armies can do. High tech mixed with low tech. Thanks very much for the info. I suspected from other things that I have read on the Grey's Scouts that Army constraints plus time constraints played a fac...

Re: Equus Men Grey's Scouts.

I've read it twice now. With my military historian hat on, I can't help but wonder how much information did the Greys have available to them in those pre internet days. I've researched in local and national libraries to find manuals used by cavalry/mounted infantry in the day they were still an intr...

The Grey's and the Horse-handler

i have just finished read the book, The Equus Men by Alexandre Binda. An excellent book on the history of the Grey's Scouts of Rhodesia. From reading I understand that the Rhodesian military had to start from scratch when it came to building a Mounted Infantry Unit. Saddles, tack, uniforms, drills t...

Re: The South African Defence Force and Horse Mounted Infantry Operations, 1974 - 1985

I just got my copy of what seems to be a pretty definitive history of The Grey's Scouts: http://www.amazon.com/Equus-Men-Rhodesias-Infantry-1896-1980/dp/1910294047/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1456665772&sr=1-1&keywords=the+equus+men It talks about the liaison with the South Africa...

Re: Grey's Scouts on Film

I believe the Rhodesian Army Camouflage is based on the British Army DPM(Disruptive Pattern Material) . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_Pattern_Material I recall that the British troops training at BATUS in southern Alberta had an "arid climate" version with lighter shades of gree...

Re: Grey's Scouts on Film

I found another youtube film only this one is a three part documentary on officer training for the Rhodesian army, filmed in 1977 I believe. In the second episode at about the 12:37 mark the Officer Cadets are sent on a six day, "adventure training" exercise with the Greys Scouts. While th...

Re: Grey's Scouts on Film

The way I understand it, they had ways around the embargo. South Africa helped quite a bit when it suited them and withheld supplies when it didn't. I remember reading about where the Hueys came from but the recollection has become a little fuzzy these days. I do remember that Rhodesia received a su...

Re: Identification help needed

i was doing some research on the 1st and 2nd Hungarian Hussars in WWII for a book I was writing. Some photos kind of ended up in a generic "Hungarian Hussar" file. Unfortunately the info on them has been lost or misplaced at the moment. This particular photo may be of a Hungarian border pa...

This photo is supposed to be Hungarian. Cap and uniform looks similar.

I liked the quick change bit and reins.

Re: Grey's Scouts on Film

Hey Roy, good to see you're still keeping an eye on this forum. I guess my main "concern" if you will, is the trooper being dumped by his horse in this "charge". I can't imagine that there would have any gunfire for this photo op. Maybe the horse was just having a bad day. Would ...

Grey's Scouts on Film

I came across this three minute clip on youtube where if you hang tough to the 1:49 mark and for about a second, the Grey's Scouts...I figure... charge toward the camera. One poor Trooper is having a little difficulty with his mount, directly in front of the camera but near their start line. Maybe t...

Re: NWP Stock Saddle Accessories; Mounties basic load.

In the early part of this post it mentions the Mounties using "buckboard" wagons for their patrols. It has been too many years now but I recall reading some reports of the day. It seemed the NWMP command had no confidence in the riding ability of the new recruits. I gather that Sam Steele ...

Re: M1928 McClellan conversion

I remember about ten or fifteen years ago now, several sets of 1928 skirts came up on ebay. I always wished I would have bid on them. I don't recall what they went for but I don't think it was too much.
