I am half way thru ther 1st season on DVD and im loving it so far but honestly its not my era
Did they get it right?

No.

I think they got "the mud, the blood, and the beer" part right. I liked the sets and costuming. They cuss and swear a lot. Basicly it's a soap opera in an old west setting. I enjoyed it.

Most people who I have talked with who know the mining era, etc. think the look and feel is better than usual. Hollywood will always opt for a story told over historical accuracy. NOBODY believes they swore that much. I have only watched parts of a couple of episodes and could not take the over the top amount of foul language. And, I work with correctional inmates every day. It is like they took a whole block of gangbangers and put boots and hats on them.

I caught part of an NPR program some time back on the creation of the series. It seems that the creators wanted to develop characters of that nature so they had former champ bull rider Gary Leffew round up some the best of the worst of the old timers that he knew. Brought them all together and had a big party. Sounds strange but I have known some old timers that would fit the bill for that series.

I haven't seen it, but the one error I know is in it is that Wild Bill Hickock was only in Deadwood for several weeks. In a lot of depictions of him we get the idea he was there for months, but he wasn't. He was acting rather strange at the time, and had just been married and seemed to be regretting not being with his wife. Also, according to some reports, he was suffering from a progressive eye condition that was rendering him blind.

Relatively recently I happened to stop in the bar where he was shot with my kids. Okay, I admit that I was wondring through the bar, in the morning, with children. Oh well, the bar noted Wild Bill had been shot there so we went in to look. I was surprised by how very small the original bar was. It's been redone so that walls from adjoining buildings make up the present spacious casino/bar. But at the time, it was tiny.

Old Wild Bill was only in the series for one or two episodes, then he got blasted. So, they were not too far off with that.

They seem to be running the show in real time for the most part. I think they're about in November, 1876. They've got a few years to cover before the town burns down in September of 1879, so things may change when that happens.

watched the nd of season 1,loved it but having checked the above link im thinking the cast is a little better looking than the real ones

There is a third season in the works, but they are being real quiet about when it's going to start. It's disgusting and facinating at the same time. Being the uneducated bumpkin that I am, I always watch it.

Ride'm like you stole'm

My only disappointments with the few episodes I've seen are the excessive foul language, and that the place just looks too "busy". But that's my main complaint about most street scenes in "period" shows, there seem to be too many extras milling around.
