Note the manner in which Pershing is saluting.

Sharp eyes, I hadn't noticed that.

This was well after that style of saluting was no longer regulation. When did that change in the US?

The earliest reference I've seen for the salute is the 1914 manual for Drill and Ceremonies, which describes a palm-down salute.

I don't have a reference, but I think the salute went from palm-out in the Civil War, to transitioning to a palm-down salute through the Indian Wars, until palm-down was pretty much universal by the Spanish-American War. It's an interesting question.

This may be from Pershings time in Europe, as the Brits certainly saluted palm out, and from a second party, the French did also. The French was in association with Legion, and they still do it that way.
Cheers
