"The Armies of Industry" about the supply of equipment to the AEF in WWI has some interesting statistics about saddle production and the design of the Springfield Rifle bolt handle:

This initial report on the number of saddles entirely leaves out any saddle in a 'artillery set', which has SIX saddles in it. The actual total was closer to 940,000. :crazy:
