Lances In The Mexican Army 1910

Use of the lance, which had been such a favourite and effective Mexican cavalry weapon, had disappeared completely by 1910 except for a ceremonial unit of presidential guard.
Given that it was still being carried by European armies, and indeed cavalry units in many armies fairly recently had been re-equipped with lances, this seems quite remarkable.
Was it a matter of training, or at least experience, and that the poor quality of the recruits prohibited a weapon which needed considerable skill to use effectively mounted?
