James Bilder, Artillery Scout: The Story of a Forward Observer with the U.S. Field Artillery in World War I

Interesting podcast on a book on the same topic:

http://www.pritzkermilitary.org/whats_o ... ery-scout/

I have to say, I was looking forward to listening to the podcast but there are so many material detail errors in some of the discussion (the Krag being a single shot, for example) that it causes me to wonder about the accuracy of anything in the discussion. If anyone happens to listen to it (and the audio variant is free), I'd be curious as to your impressions.

This is also very good, albeit not new.

That's the book finder link. The book is "Diary of an Artillery Scout" by Horatio Rodgers. Rodgers was the grandson of a CW General from RI. After WWI, he went on to Harvard Medical School and served as a Doctor in WWII so he is clearly an intelligent observer. His book was privately published and I suspect has always been "under the radar". You won't know how good it is unless you read it...

As a further coincidence — years ago I loaned my copy to a friend and neighbor whose father was in the same unit and served as a mounted despatch carrier.
