Forums at Society of the Military Horse

Hello people,

I'm new here, Belgian collector and been searching the internet for Forums, FB groups etc about cavalry and military horses.
Stumbled upon this one.

I recently aquired this mint 1942 saddle. Size 2. Made by Otto Sindel in Berlin.
I also have a 1943 and 1935, but this one has the extra 2 loops on the side of the seat, to strap on extra equipment. Only 10% of the saddles were equiped with these extra 2.

Any idea whether these had a different model nr?

You've noticed! It's an unfortunate trend in nearly all forum type sites - I personally believe because of the over-simplified nature of certain social media platforms. It might be slightly easier to manage for first-timers, but the persistence of the information is poor at best.

That has to be the single most pristine example of a pre-46 Armesattel I've ever seen. Perhaps an artillery-related piece with the extra 'hanger' on the seat? Most of the ones here in the US look like leftovers from a trash pit. Otto S. must have been a prominent maker - I once owned an example marked for that maker from 1935.

A question for you - is the Arme Sattel 25 by KG Schumacher still the go-to book on this subject? Last I saw it was potentially available from his son Ulrich, but that's been a little while ago when I saw that info.

While we Americans complain about the quality of our common published reference materials, there seems to be a real lack of similar publications in many European countries (or that is my impression). I've been looking for years for a reasonable publication showing 19th and 20th century French military horse equipments.

Thanks. The Belgian Army was cleaning out an old museum and this saddle happened to be up for sale.. not for long.
Otto Sindel, one of the many makers I'm afraid. The list is long.

About the book by Schumacher, I can tell you in about a week, cause I just ordered it from Ulrich. Sels for about 50€, + shipping

Fingers crossed, I kinda hope it's worth the money.

This book below contains a lot of period pictures, and shows a lot of the accessories that go with the saddle.
As you say, there isn't that much around about the Armeesattel25 or any other EU cavalry equipment.
My other saddles...

These extra loops are on some of the M 1889 German Saddle too. The example photographed on page 179 of The German Cavalry by Herr and Nguyen shows an M89 with the two loops.

One does find something interesting on the internet now and then.
About these extra loops, seems they were used for a variaty of tasks.
One is to provide telephone lines by communication troops.

That's really true. Things like Reddit and, worst of all Twitter, have really diluted the quality of the internet everywhere.

It's almost like the history of television in which, early on, you have an intentional effort for some really high quality programming which, over time, becomes stuff like "The Big Bang Theory". Hard to get a focus on the quality stuff.
