Just a small post on the anniversary of the attack on Columbus and to remember those civilians and soldiers who lost their lives. Also those who fought off the attack and pursued the attackers into Mexico.

The first pic shows a selection of related items, the military items being of the period and marked to different troops and members of the 13th Cavalry, this includes some related books and 13th Cavalry photo albums. The trumpet was supposedly picked up after the attack on Columbus (it has some provenance).

The Colonel's Eagle insignia belonged to Col. Slocum, the last photo shows just a few relics including 13th Cavalry dog tags recovered from Columbus.

Just a few items to help remember this day.

An odd Columbus related item, oversized cardboard peanut shell with ribbon that once contained what? If any knows or has an idea I would appreciate their thoughts.

Are the short cases 7x57mm ?

My wife and I attended the 100th Anniversary celebration in Columbus in 2016. It was quite a show (with 150+ mounted riders from Mexico) and a major contingent of Active Duty troops from Ft. Bliss. There is a nice, if small, museum there. The town has one motel with 7 rooms, 2 restaurants that only serve lunch and dinner, and the museum. If plan to visit plan on staying in Deming, about 30 miles north. The nearest major town is Las Cruces.

The 30/06 cases were kindly given to me by a good friend, he has been visiting Columbus for many years and has both picked them up over the years and been given them by people who had found them, I was very appreciative what a great gift to be given.
What made it better was that he gave me them when visiting like Bill on the 100th anniversary.
Bill we met but sadly quite briefly as I was called away to see someone who was leaving. I regret not having more time on that memorable day.

The padlock between the cartridge cases was also found in Columbus by another friend, it is an Ordnance Dept Model 1913 Pistol Rack lock that has been cut open, of course I cannot connect it to the 13th being that so many troops were in Columbus after the attack, still an interesting item.

In answer to your question, yes. I managed to visit for the memorial day and the celebration day, although different I have fond memories of both.
