Re: Armeesattel 25

Tom,

they make the AS 25 for almost 2000 €. I don't know about the harness, I'll have to find out.

New manufacturer for Armeesattel 25

I just found a saddlemaker who builds new Armeesattel 25's in the original 7 sizes. Unfortunately they do not have any photos on the net, the only pics they have show a modified version of the AS 25 which has exactly the same sizes (all 7 sizes that very initially built), but is a bit shorter (the ...

Re: The Ft. Riley Slide

Friends,

in my statement I was talking about a "true" slide, this is sliding down a very steep slope on the horses haunches. That is when we were taught to sit straight above the center of balance, something I called leaning back, which was wrong, fortunately I was corrected. I also agree that you ...

If the terrain was very steep we were taught to lean back, like the Portugese Dragoons in the pic here:

Re: Rhodesian McClellans and the Greys Scouts

Hi Roy,

we were talking about all sorts of things, but what came to my mind was one thing: when coming back from partol or ops, what was the daily routine for man and trooper like? Were there any medical checks done on the horses, who looked after the tack, who cared for the horses (when the men ...

Re: Rhodesian McClellans and the Greys Scouts

Tom
I will deal with the ops side that is base camps in answer to your questions. To start with because of the increase in size of the Regt, we had to revamp the Sqn's to make full use of our manpower problems. So we instituted the use of stable managers, who were to be responsible for care of ...

Barb horses in the German Cavalry – Russia 1944

Miegel writes:” In April 1944 the Regiment recieved the first Barb horses that were long overdue, small, wiry French Colonial horses. The German riders start loving them very soon. “Trusting, almost like a child” these reliable comrades were described ...

First riding lessons:

According to Hartmut Miegel who started his cavalry officer training on 01. July 1942 in Fürstenwalde east of Berlin, all of the other recruits had been riding before. When volunteering for a “Aufklärungsabteilung” which is a reconnaissance unit, he imagined to go to a ...

book: In der Kavallerie 1942-1945

Gentlemen,

I just bought the book "In der Kavallerie 1942-1945" by Lieutenant Miegler who wrote about his experiences in the German "Reiter Regiment 41". There are some interesting passages on Cavalry training, the use of captured French Spahi horses in Russia, and a lot of other interesting stuff ...

Re: Armeesattel 25

Another website with good photos of German WWII horse tack. Pat, you wanted to know about the horse goggles we had in SWA. If I remember correctly I found a few pairs in an old stable of ours before we built the new stables for the M-APU. Page through the Armeesattel 25 pages and you'll find them ...
