Tom, Can you clarify the purpose of the 1 dee on the cantle on your 89? I know that some models of the 25 had 2 dees on the cantle and were used for carrying a MG or a art range finder. It is alttle rarer to find a 25 with the dees as they did not make as many. Tom
Pat,
yes a very nice find ...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
The cut out on the helmet above the ear was retained in the WWI helmet for the Cavalry.
Tom
Why was that? Does it serve a function on the M16 helmet?
Pat,
I just read in "Riding into the Twilight" the new book on German Cavalry, that the cutouts on the M16 helmets Cavalry version had been ...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
These are no US spurs. They look German, but I can't really tell, they might even be civilian, but if they used German tack, I guess they would have been using military spurs as well.Sam Cox wrote:

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
Pat,
thanks a lot for posting the photos!
Sam, looks like Armeesattel 25 to me and would fit the time frame.
I'll have to get the matching stirrups for the saddle, the ones with two slots for the lance cup (Lanzenschuh) as seen above. I'm looking foward to riding the saddle, after I got my ...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
Gents,
I managed to buy an Armeesattel 89 from 1916 in good riding condition for a very reasonable price. Again my question from the AS 25 thread: what is the best way to treat the leather if I want to ride the saddle regularly (no ways I'd neglect ma Mac though! The AS 89 is for a different horse ...

Re: Armeesattel 25
Gents,
I was fortunate enough to get a pair of German saddle bags for the AS 25, in excellent condition. I still need to get the connecting piece (Überwurf) for them (plus the saddle!). An old German Cavalryman I met by chance gave them to me. What would be the best way to treat the leather? I ...

the ride was done at the "Truppenübungsplatz Stetten am Kalten Markt", an Army training ground. It has a long Cavalry history, the Württemberg and Bavarian Cavalry trained there in the 19th Century already, so did the Reichswehr and Geran Wehrmacht Cavalry. It is on the Swabian Alb in South ...

Thanks Dusan. Mr. Lehmann is just great, all the credit goes to him!
Here some info on the saddles seen:
The troppers saddle was called: Kavallerie-Reitsattel Ordonnanz 1906
Introduced in 1895, improved in 1906, Mr. Lehmann does not know which improvement/changes were made, though he believes the ...

Re: Swiss Military Tack
Interesting that the Swiss carried anti tank rockets on horseback. Most units discussed in the forum were for COIN duties (Grey Scouts) or early Homeland Defense (Coast Guard mounted units, Circle C Cowboys). If they needed horses to cross the terrain, why did they expect to find enemy tanks? In ...

Re: Swiss Military Tack
Did anyone notice the way the troopers saddle blanket is folded? The open end of the blanket points toward the pommel. All the manuals I know put the open side of the blanket to the cantle or the flank of the horse (facing down). I have to ask Mr. Lerhmann why they did that, maybe because after ...

Pat,
thanks! It is the MG51 similar to the MG42. Note the quick release buckle on the strap holding the MG ammo boxes on the pack saddle.
My thanks go to Mr. Lehmann who made the photos for us!

The excellent photos are courtesy of Mr. Ulrich Lehmann in Berne, Switzerland. My thanks go to him, he will send us more information, not just on swiss tack but on Swiss Cavalry in general. Mr. Lehmann was an Adjudant in the Swiis Dragoons, a "Bereiter" (professional rider) and later on riding ...
