Re: RE: US M1918 Caisson for the "French 75mm"

Couvi:

Speaking of Sill officers with a limited understanding of old guns, wasn't it you who told about the retiring officer who wanted to shoot a field gun of some sort at bales of straw until the issue was escalated to a higher level and killed off?

Darned hard-mouthed nags, though, those wooden steeds. Slab -sided and non responsive, too.

Re: French saddle, bridle, and French 75

Interesting. This makes things a bit more clear, although I suspect the first link was created on the basis of the manual you sent. Having the bradoon on chains with toggles is a new idea to me.

French saddle, bridle, and French 75

Couvi, this is your milieu, not mine -- a French -language site based in France, which seems to be mostly about the French 75 field gun. That gets you coming and going, my Francophone, artillery-expert friend.

Re: Ist cavalry Division metallic dui question

Yo know, that reference is remarkably useful, but a couple of questions persist: Were DUI designs ever reassigned from dormant units to active ones; and with the areas where this reference says that the DUIs were textile, there are metallic pre-war DUIs for sale. How do we reconcile this?

Re: ACW ring bit

Yes, unpopular.

Think about riding those in combat with no opportunity to maintain a balanced seat and calm hands. they were supposed to be for very hard mouths, but I can't imagine there would be any mouth at all for very long.

As to the splinters -- very real issue -- also happens with some ...

Re: ACW ring bit

Don't know about the marks. However, I am responding anyway because that was the first model of 1859 I ever owned. My mother's cousin gave it to me one day when he found out I had an interest. Mint condition. I'm looking at it right now.

You know, it is a fun and interesting artifact, but as a ...

Re: The Hope Saddle - comments from 1855-7 trial officers

My late friend, Graber Kidwell, had been a BG in the field artillery before WW2. He was about my size (I am 6'5, 228 lbs). He once told my wife and me that he specifically joined the artillery because he liked to ride and he was too big for the cavalry.

Re: The Hope Saddle - comments from 1855-7 trial officers

Interesting. the Texas Hope saddle I have is quite small, so small that I questioned its authenticity early on. Actually, Todd, I started around years --decades?-- ago when I ialked with you at Ft. RIley one year and you pointed out that many of them are small. Mine weighs lass than an McClellan.

You were a few feet a way when I got that photo. It is a photo that I took of a larger 19th century shot on display for our benefit at the CMH when we went there with Jim Ott in '15.

Of course, Dusan's book! I bought it on release and did not think to look this up in it. Thanks for your response and for reminding me. I am radically pruning my collection. that boot gets listed tonight.

I actually had far more stuff than I remembered once I dug into the boxes. D and I have been ...

Not to my knowledge. Of course, there is a better than even chance that such a study would be in Spanish. Maybe some of our Spanish-speaking members know something?

Re: Officers saddles

Yes, well aware of the saddle fit problem, and how often it is ignored. In fact, I cannot use ANY historic military saddle with my wide barrel- and-backed Arabians. Even with most modern saddles, like my Stubbens, I must have the very widest tree and sometimes use pads with pockets for shims in ...

Officers saddles

In prepping some more of my stuff for the great winnowing out of the storage area, I found that I had forgotten that I had the '16 tainig saddle, the 1
'17 field saddle and pommel pouches and the '17 Saumur -type officers' saddle with pommel pouches. I took a lot of pix, some for auction site X and ...

I'll pull some together this coming week. the ones on the auction site are vanishing. I must have priced them too low, because the nearly complete '09 bridle (everything except link strap and bradoon rein, and the '79 and '85 bags were snapped up at the max within the first day. I'll be posting ...

Rare saddlebags

Friends:

Down in the sale section I have links to some rare or scarce saddle bags I've listed on ebay out of my collection (1872, 1874, 1879, 1885). I mention it here because many of you are not actively collecting and therefore may skip the "for sale: section. However, the detailed photos at the ...

Re: Officer's Saddle

As I recall, officers rode officers' saddle except for uncommon cases of shortness of cash or convenience. It is worth keeping in mind that many senior officers would no longer fit into a Mac. Macs are made for typical cavalrymen, who are on the mid to smaller size spectrum. Big guys, or guys who ...
