Horses and WWII Gasoline Rationing
I know that this was briefly touched on a long time ago, but I was looking at the gasoline purchase limits due to rationing during World War Two and struck by the fact that the limits were so low for so many people (most people had A stickers and were limited to four gallons per week). Industry and ...

Not a pleasant topic, I know, but a contemporary example of mounted police very much in action.

Re: Confederate Brands
Might have been a short sword, as some artillery non-commissioned officers on both sides of the WBS were armed with just such. It is generally believed that this was only the case of dismounted "foot" artillery troops, but in wartime, who knows? Artillery short swords turn up with odd ide...

Re: Confederate Brands
As a slight aside, I may merge this topic with the earlier one that I just bumped up, and an earlier one that I recall on the CS regulations if I can find it. These are interesting topics and perhaps having the information merged will be of some use. I wanted to note that as I don't want to create c...

Re: Confederate Brands
Thanks. The saber or sword is remarkably short and straight bladed. I'm not an expert on edged weapons by any means, but it doesn't appear to be the curved saber of the era, but much more in the nature of a short sword. FWIW, photography of the era was mirror image, as opposed to the refracted photo...

Re: Confederate Brands
As a slight addition, on the photographs, one thing I should have mentioned is that studio portraits are particularly problematic from the Civil War as to arms. For some reason, studio photographers loved to hand their soldier subjects revolvers and sabers, even if they weren't cavalrymen. So you'll...

Re: Confederate Brands
Thanks for the reply. I do know that he was in a Texas Light Artillery unit and I do have a picture of him in his uniform with hat, saber and holster/pistol. All field artillery of that era was mounted. I'm not familiar with "light artillery" in this the context of the Confederate forces,...

Re: Remounts
Yes, Joe. There is an excellent, fairly new, book on this subject: "The Perfect Horse", By Elizabeth Letts. She chronicles the events of the rescue of the Spanish Riding School horses in Vienna- and other breeds, mostly TBs, scattered at studs throughout axis held territories- by a few me...

Re: 1st Division Parade, New York City, September 10, 1919.
There was a second parade in Washington D. C. on September 12.
I wonder if that one was the last US victory parade lead by the theater commander on horseback?

Re: Cavalry in WWI
Often omitted in the story of American cavalry in World War One is that American "square" divisions in the war included organic cavalry on the French model. So there were actually a lot of cavalry formations, including some National Guard cavalry units that were used in this fashion, they ...

Re: The Bates Battlefield, Wyoming. July 4, 1874.
Interesting overall. In as much as he was well aware of the potential risk, one wonders why Bates did not grasp the opportunity himself by sending a team to command those heights? Indeed, while it's playing armchair general on my part, I think this battle was pretty poorly fought from the Army's pr...

Re: Trailmobile
On this old thread, fwiw, Trailmobile is still in business. They started off as a trailer manufacturer just prior to World War One and then changed their name to that right about WWI. Today they make semi trailers, which is basically something that the started to make during World War One, making a ...

Nice account and documentation, Pat - thanks, very interesting. Out of curiosity, did you see evidence of artifacts e.g. cartridge cases, etc.? Some sites I've been to that are not open to the general public still have such evidence, and it's always interesting to see that in order to help form a p...

The Bates Battlefield, Wyoming. July 4, 1874.
We (my two kids and I) were fortunately recently to be able to tour one of Wyoming's little known battlefields recently, thanks due to the local landowner who controls the road access letting us on. We very much appreciate their generosity in letting us do so. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/483...
