Re: Cavalry uniforms
The fading of the OD is an interesting point. Back in the 60's, nobody wanted to get a new set of fatigues, because it made you look like a newbie. The faded looking ones showed you had been around. There were many two year draftees back then and when someone would ETS, they would sell their old fat...

Re: Cavalry uniforms
Very nice Kurt.
Taking this back to another thread, how was HQ Troop shown on the saddle cloth? Was it simply the number with HQ underneath?

Re: Lanyards & the M1911
I think the move was a good idea Pat. The "saddle cloth" and the "lanyard" threads are almost completely on topic for later searching. In the photo above, the trooper has his lanyard coming across his chest, as in the other picture. Maybe I missed this before, but we wo...

Re: Promotion of Jonathon Wainright (photo).
Look closely at the rider in the second picture. It looks like something is attached at the butt of the pistol and the lanyard is running across his chest, instead of from the shoulder. Just a guess.

Re: Electronic devices
I doubt that will occur, but I do think that there may actually be something to that, in spite of being a constant reader myself, in a family of constant readers. You see Ipods and Iphones everywhere now, and I suspect there's a class of individual who hardly reads books at all now. Indeed, I heard...

Re: Electronic devices
I too was reluctant to take the step to a Kindle. My wife took the leap first and asked for one for Christmas. Knowing I had best learn how it worked, to save it flying across across the room, I checked it out. I bought myself one soon after and really like it. Now, from the standpoint of them repla...

Re: Lanyards & the M1911
Added to that, note that the lanyards would have had to be pretty long in order to just get down to the holster of that period, which was hinged and worn very low. Odd, given the short lanyards. They might, therefore, have been a colossal pain. Also, something I've wondered about is whether solders...

Re: Lanyards & the M1911
I'll just toss this out for what it might (or might not) be worth. As a new MP in 1973, I was issued a single clip lanyard for my .45. These were in large supply in unit supply rooms. Not sure when it went out, but I know it was in use through early 80's.

Re: Lanyards & the M1911
It was the missing slide that threw me. I couldn't really see them wearing both. It actually looks like a good idea. One to the pistol and one to the mag, so all is neat and orderly. Then eject the mag and forget about it, while going for the second.

Re: Lanyards & the M1911
Pat, there are two lanyards there. Is it comparing the two types, or it one for the mags and the other the pistol?

Re: Lanyards & the M1911
I just found a reference that said the original lanyard had "three" clips. One for pistol and two for mags. I have no idea if this is true and can't seem to find a picture of one if it is.

Is that photo reversed? Carbine straps seem to be on the wrong side. Saber too, I believe.

That was amazing. It must have been done correctly for them to buy it, so everything else had to be as correct as possible. Well done.

Re: War Horse
I have not sen the movie, but a friend told me today that several people had told them, that the tack was wrong and the bits used were not around in WWI. I had heard, here and other places, that the tack was spot on, so I wanted to confirm this before I responded to them.

Re: Coast Guard and Chinese Cavalry
I like Wayne's movies very much, but must say that he looks pretty like Heston in the "Horse Soldiers" and "Fort Apache" and other two titles of the trilogy. Alex. Is every one aware that watching the "Cavalry Trilogy;" Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Rio Gr...
