Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

It's interesting that this wasn't even tried until after WWI. Of course, the US is huge compared to any of the European countries (except Russia) and our road system was poor. That was, in part, due to the railroad. Railroads were so successful in moving material that what road system had existed ...

Also, merely because it says "US" doesn't' mean that the Federal government made it. Making a branding iron is pretty easy.

Re: A look at one of the early repalcements for the horse

Today is the centennial of the commencement of the 1919 transcontinental Motor Transport Convoy first day on the road in 1919. The goal was to test vehicles and to test the American road system for future mobilizations so as to have an alternative to the railroads.

U.S. Army Bugle Calls for the 1910-1920 period

Is anyone aware of what the list of standard bugle calls was for the Punitive Expedition/World War One era? Had it remained unchanged since the Civil War?

Re: With Carrington on the Bozeman Road

Could books like this - works of apparent fiction - hold some valid historic information, maybe nuggets? Not sure I've ever read one like this. Wishful thinking perhaps. The author also wrote 'With Sully in Sioux Land', which I have somewhere but haven't read, purchased it at the same time as this ...

Other than private purchase for officers, right?

Re: With Carrington on the Bozeman Road

Interesting.

I found a reference to it being a book for boys written in the "Oliver Optic" style. I'm not familiar with that reference at all. Is anyone else familiar with it?

Re: Increase of the Army - some pointed commentary by Thomas Hart Benton

It is interesting that in 1855 he is stating, ‘If we must have them, rather let them follow their true destination--furnish promotions, and wait for a chance to go to Cuba.’

I wasn’t aware that we were covetous of Cuba at that early date.

It's not well remembered, but that was during the ...

He appears that he is quite well equipped!

And most with German war prizes at that!

FWIW, there's a companion poster by the same artist for the same event, that's shocking to view for any modern artists as its blisteringly racist. I therefore didn't post that one, but it really demonstrates ...

Re: Interesting CW Photos from the Library of Congress

Hi Pat

I think he has just slung the sabre over from the left for the photo, it looks to still be attached to longer lower strap and possibly the shorter top strap normally also attached on the left of the belt, but now possibly attached next to the holster to keep the sabre in place. The ...

Re: Interesting CW Photos from the Library of Congress

The thing I can't help but notice is that he's carrying his saber and his holster on the same side. Something is the reverse of the normal pattern. I think the second photo has the correct orientation, in which case he's basically carrying his saber backwards.

And he has a revolver jammed into ...

Did you notice that the rolling kitchens were smoking? I.e., they had a fire lit in them as they were rolling along.
