Re: CONTINENTAL AND MILITIA CAVALRY COMPARED: A CASE STUDY FROM SARATOGA, 1777

I somewhat wondered if available remounts also might help explain the small numbers. I.e., I wonder if horse numbers in North America didn't lend themselves to widespread military use, or perhaps attrition, and of importing horses from Europe, in the case of the British, may have presented too much ...

Re: Nelson Miles, May 30, 1921

Seeing the photo reminded me of one I have, added below a member of C troop 13th cavalry circa 1907, similar seat and like in the photo of Nelson Miles he has a Whitman saddle. Kurt. IMG_20151124_0001AA.jpg The pith helmet on that one really threw me. At first glance, I thought it was a British tro...

I occasionally see some working stockmen still sit like that, although its rapidly becoming a thing of the past.

Sharp eyes, I hadn't noticed that.

This was well after that style of saluting was no longer regulation. When did that change in the US?

Re: Notice on Passing of Dallas Freeborn

I'm really sorry to learn of his passing.

He hadn't posted much, or maybe at all, in recent years and I was concerned what that meant. From the obit, I see he lived a long life, and I hope his final years were good ones. He'll really be missed.

Apparently the Nine Mile facility offers packing classes, which I'm sure would be good ones.

Re: Government Mules (real equines, not the band)

The biggest issue for Forest Service (and other land management agencies) use of equine in their work is the scarcity of employees with equine experience (or the desire to use or learn how to use equine) versus the plethora of employees who know how to ride a mountain bike or UTV. Not really direct...

Re: Government Mules (real equines, not the band)

One of the interesting things here is that the Forest Service relocated this string back to Wyoming. A few years ago, it was placed in Colorado for some reason, but now its back.

Re: Washington D. C. Hunt, December 4, 1920

Many years ago a girl friend and I shared our first horseback experience riding in Rock Creek Park. I was sore for days! You can still do this: https://rockcreekhorsecenter.com/ That brings back a recollection of when my wife and I were dating. We were gathering cattle and I was riding with her fat...

I noticed that too. In fact, they're too long for any seat.

Which makes me wonder if this was a posed photo. Usually when I see stirrups that long, the subject doesn't actually ride. I know that Lejeune must have known how to ride, but none the less.
