Re: War Horse
Hi Sandy, I really am not well posted on horse prices in either 1914 or now - perhaps John M. can help out. The sum I showed was a conversion of Pat's 1914 £30.00 using the referenced site comparison/inflation calculator. Was £30.00 a large sum for a horse in 1914? It would certainly have been a maj...

Re: War Horse
The Royal Dragoons - "the Royals" were, until 1969, the senior regiment of line cavalry giving the more celebrated Second Dragoons "Scots Greys", a cavalry example from the day of their formation. The Royals did everything (including capturing an eagle at Waterloo) that the Secon...

Re: A soggy view of the Tongue River Battlefield
Yes I went to the Fetterman site and had it all to myself to wander and wonder. I had hoped I might find a Henry case out by Fisher-Wheatley Rocks but no luck. I can't remember why we didn't visit the Tongue River site except that there were so many sites and too little time and we had to make choic...

Re: A soggy view of the Tongue River Battlefield
Thank you very much for posting these photos Pat. I hadn't seen this battleground before. The camp ground looks as if it would be very attractive if it wasn't flooded. Is it situated where any of the action took place? If so, that is a pity. Couple more questions: Has the river changed course any si...

Re: What cavalry officers wanted - circa 1864
Thank you for posting this interesting correspondence it will help inform my work on the 1833-1865 period. Was any further reference made to the questionnaire or its result in the United States Service magazine? I am very interested in Capt. Ash's description of the ideal sabre as being of a British...

Re: WW 2 Sovjet Cavalry
Those knives are Russian (Cossack?) sabres or Shasquas
In some configurations, as for Dragoons, the bayonet is attached to the front of the sabre scabbard.
Google "Shasqua" for lots of examples.
