Re: EMPIRE of the SUMMER MOON
In our very historically oriented group we tend to think of "cavalry" in the very traditional sense of the mounted arm of a larger military force. For most folks any body of mounted fighters would be "cavalry." It may be "sloppy thinking" but there it is. :|

Re: EMPIRE of the SUMMER MOON
It's been a while since I've read it, but Walter Prescott Webb's history of the Texas Rangers says about the same thing. He also covers the adoption of new weapons and tactics and how they were developed. He's probably a bit kinder to the Ranger force as they made some pretty serious errors from ...

My wife & I went about 10 days back. Agree it rates a GFF*!
Also agree it's more of a reinterpretation than a remake. I heard an interview the other day with the Cohen Bros. Only one will admit to having seen the original and that was many years ago.

There's a Russian Foxtrot Class sub in San Diego. IIRC there may be one or two further north on the West Coast.
How on earth did those end up there?
[quote="wkambic"Having gone through U.S. Fleet boats, U-Boats, and Foxtrots I'm amazed at how advanced the Fleet boats were, in comparison. They ...

There's a Russian Foxtrot Class sub in San Diego. IIRC there may be one or two further north on the West Coast. The interesting thing was that as you approached the entrance there was a large section of "culvert" with a ramp or step on each side. The sign said "if you can't pass through this you won ...

The pumps are "generally unserviceable".....could we set new members to bailing as a sort of initiation ceremony? If the pumps are unserviceable, how do they figure she's "stable for towing?" An unpowered ship without pumps is a potential anchor, isn't it?

Re: war horse the movie
WWI is the "war for our time."
It beings with an act of terrorism, leads to an over-reaction by a Great Power, and plunges a bunch of countries into a killing match that ends inconclusively and does little more than set the stage for the next conflict. It's a great "ultimate futility of war" story ...

As sort of an ignorant question, on my part, how often would we expect a World War One physician to have a horse?
As often as he needed to travel? Not trying for a "smart" remark, here, but rather considering that motor transport was probably less prevalent that we sometimes assume. An ordinary ...

Re: Working with Animals, another Census
Related to this question, and to an earlier discussion on the list somewhere about how WWII opened up college, through the GI bill, to entire classes of people who had not previously attended, I'll ask this specifically regarding World War Two, but also trail it out as late as the Korean War.

Just got back from a short jaunt West and had a couple of days to be at "loose ends" in San Diego while my wife attended a medical conference. I was watching CNN on Monday and it would be best described as "All Swine Flu, All The Time." And mostly talking heads with little or no really valuable ...
