Re: Attempted Cavalry?

Would the closest analogy to this be mounted police officers? They have proven to be very effective in providing police services in very urbanized areas (New York and Chicago, for just two examples). What service are these guys providing? Are they police or soldiers?

Maybe Roy could help with some ...

Re: How to verify if a horse served in active duty

The Marines have been running this program for a very long time. I'd believe that this un-serviceable horse was "surveyed" (Sea Services talk talk for "no longer useful for its intended purpose"). I don't believe it was an Afghanistan vet. The Marines tend to run a very lean operation. It's unlikely ...

Re: How to verify if a horse served in active duty

We know that service dogs were taken to Afghanistan and brought back home after service.

Were any horses taken to Afghanistan? If not, how were they procured locally? Is there any evidence that any were "repatriated?"

Moving a dog is a small problem; moving a horse is a large problem.

I'd want to ...

Re: Artillery Whip

Oh, OK.

When I saw "hook" my first thought was a substantial hook for a task or maybe like the handle of a hunt whip. Now I see what you mean. :)

A "hanger" for the whip when not in use? Retainer for the lash? The former more likely than the latter given the orientation of the hook.

Re: Artillery Whip

What type of "hook" do you mean? Do you have a photo reference?

I found this language which the site presents as the standard from the 1861 U.S. Army Ordiance Manaual:

" Stock (rawhide) about 30 inches long. The raw hide is first covered with India-rubber cloth; 1 leather cover, sewed over the ...

I'm sure that's true about "service ceiling." We were way behind the Europeans at that point in aircraft development.

Re: Aircraft crew recovery

The aircraft were under powered, had serious "de-lamination" problems with glued parts due to the very dry climate, and navigation was iffy due to poor charts. It took some "intestinal fortitude" to operate in that environment. It also took a while for ground commanders to figure out how to ...

Re: What kind of pack saddle is this?

Looking at this thing I note that at one corner of the "table" there is a single ring. I don't see one at the other corners. There's not enough photo detail to see if there were once rings there or not. If there were that suggests something was supposed to be carried on the "table" and it was likely ...

Re: Off Topic: Canteen cup lids

I posted a link to that on the WWII list and it seems to be the consensus, although not the undisputed consensus, that the lid is not a standard item, and perhaps something made in the POW camp.

This was my thought. How would this fit into a standard canteen carrier (mounted or dismounted)? Is ...

Re: Mounted Marine on Okinawa

Some equine cultures are/were based on riding stallions. We went to Brazil some years back and, in general, stallions were for riding and mares were for breeding and geldings were unknown.

To be more precise, ordinary stallions were ridden, elite stallions were kept for breeding, and if a stallion ...

Re: BBC Quick WWI History

I've read that the largest item in both tonnage and volume shipped by the Royal Navy from Britain to the Continent was forage and fodder. There was a systematic collection by 1915 by the Army Service Corps in Britain. In addition there was a huge jump in imports of forage and fodder from the U.S ...

Re: New Horses

Mercifully, very few horses are true "outlaws." In some breeds and uses ill temperament is not a significant bar to breeding (the TB flat racing world comes to mind where speed is everything). In most breeds it is, however. Still, as there can be "brain damaged humans" I guess there can be "brain ...

Re: The Principal Breeds of Horses in North American, 1872.

Probably rights as a half truth.

In this time frame there were no "breed associations" as we think of them. Those begin to form around the end of the 19th Century and really take off in the '20s and '30s as horses transition from a necessity to a pass time.

There were many local "types" across the ...
