On the strength of endorsements by folks here I watched a good portion of Major Dundee several months ago. What impressed me the most was the cannons' recoil. I don't recall seeing that bit of accuracy in any other movies. Vietnam? That never occurred to me, but with movies I tend not to dig too dee...

Among the holiday programming offered by one of our local TV stations (KUEN) was a two hour collection of concerts given by the US Air Force Academy Band. Perhaps bands, plural, would be a better description of the concert. While I didn't catch the whole show, what I did hear was a C/W band, a moder...

Bob; Though I gather that accusations have been been made from time to time, I think it fair to say that 'group think' is carefully guarded against here, so any polite discussion relating to military horsemanship is appreciated, whether everyone agrees, as is seldom the case, or not. So soft pedalin...

Bob; Interesting comments about Morris, whom I confess I hold in high regard. No offense taken though. I'll have to re- read him again but I think you'll find that the crest release is a tool he recommends for emergencies and beginners only. I would guess that it grew out of his abhorrence for anyth...

Roper;
I would echo Philips comments only adding that the John Tupper Cole preface, found in most later editions, is worth having. One sturdy buckram reading edition would be the one of the Van Nostrands. Welcome. Sorry for the brevity, I'm running late. Greetings to all.

Philip; I have to add my thanks as well. There were several titles in your bibliography I was not familiar with that I'll have to find. I was especially happy to learn of another tract by Chamberlin. There are also, as you may know, two other treatises by Lt de Sevy, published by the cavalry school:...

Ron; Upon reading your comments I was reminded that slippage with leather soles on the K E treads was a problem for me, especially in wet weather. Switching to man made soles was a reluctant compromise of my preference for leather. I've not experienced discomfort with the K E's though. I'm guessing ...

There is a wonderful reminiscence and tribute to the great horseman by George Morris in this weeks Chronical.I've learned that their articles aren't available online, but this ones well worth whatever it takes to find a March 14th issue.Enjoy

"Horse Packing in pictures" By Francis W. Davis, Scribners and Sons.1975, is a good one, with lots of detailed drawings of knots and hitches,and more. I think it's a little more thorough than "Horses Hitches and Rocky Trails" hence, a better primer.Less personal - more info.I thi...

re:the punitive expedition I may be bringing coals to Newcastle but just in case it might help, there is a nice bibliography in the back of"The Story of the US Cavalry"by John K Herr and Edward s Wallace: Littlebrown,1953, which might have something for you.They write only briefly on the s...
