Re: A Fantastic New Book on the Swords and Sabers of the US
Thank you for your kindness. If the work has merits they would be fewer without Joe's invaluable help and input. By ruthless editing and masterly page setting he has made my manuscript and photographs into the handsome book I think you will appreciate if using the work. I hope it will be of use and ...

Re: Great War Memorials
The memorial should honour their service.
Their identities are important, their personal characteristics are not - and if necessary can be found by research by interested parties.
They all gave all for their country.

Re: 1912 U.S. Service saddle Punitive Expedition
Hi Cesar,
Yes I did mean with a slicked edging just to finish as the full size originals, but if the leather won't take it so be it.
It was a very minor addition to truly excellent work.

Re: 1912 U.S. Service saddle Punitive Expedition
Really excellent work, the detail is splendid.
Only a small suggestion: perhaps all edges could be slicked as in the original?
Otherwise exceptionally fine work, very well done.

Re: U.S. Carbine Boot (again)
Hi Richard, Your carbine boot is a fairly frequently seen modification of the 1885 boot with the lower strap moved higher for attachment to the rear quarter strap rather than the girth ring. The reason it is only 11" long and shows no other signs of modification is that the lower 1/2", whe...

Re: Draw Sabers, Charge!
Philip St. George Cooke, who knew a thing or two about pre CW Indian fighting, had this to say about sabre charges in a letter to the Adj. General March 20th 1857: "I favor much sharp sabres, and would desire a scabbard that would not dull them. These opinions are founded on an experience of wi...

I included the following discussion from “Volunteer Cavalry. The Lesson of a Decade” by former Brevet Captain Frederick Whittaker, Army & Navy Journal 1871 reprinted in “Journal of the United States Cavalry Association” Vol. XX Nos.76, & 77 1910, in my book "Arming & Equipping the U...

Bill,

I hadn't heard of that one and thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Re: News Item: Incoming New York Mayor vows to end hansom c
The horse drawn conveyances referred to here don't seem to be Hansom cabs as we might know them from Victorian costume dramas:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hansom_cab.
In these cabs the driver sits behind the passengers.
The NY conveyances appear to be rather more like a carriage of some description?

Re: Frontier Army Gatling use
Mention of GA Custer recalls that he refused the offer to take a Gatling (s?) on the final approach to LBH. The gun(s?) had been slow and often left behind the Montana column (despite heroic efforts to keep up) on the outward march and GAC didn't want to be slowed when he was finally allowed off the...

Nice image, thanks for posting.
He is equipped with the 1874 sabre belt.
Can't remember offhand when breast pockets were added to uniform jackets - anyone?
Happy New Year.
