Re: Krupp Limber find
Great project. Glad to see you got it M.C. I Hope a limber frame and axel can be found or accurately reproduced to complete it. My German 10,5cm lFH 1898/09 Limber will be completed, if I can ever get time away from work. On a somewhat related topic--I still have a spare original German 9cm C/1873 b...

Re: My "lost" cannon question
You seem to be referring to the Woodruff Gun. I have an original example in my collection that was likely from 4th Iowa Cavalry service. They were in service with several Federal cavalry, and light artillery units including 10th Illinois Cavalry, 2nd Iowa Cavalry, 4th Iowa Cavalry, and 1st Illinois ...

Re: British Yeomanry or Lancer?
Brian Thanks for the response. I have emailed the Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry Museum and asked for their opinion on the regimental uniform and if they had any members of the Dixon family on the unit roster from the appropriate time range. My guess is this would be 1860-1880. So far no answe...

British Yeomanry or Lancer?
I have attached a photograph from one of my family albums. I believe this is my Great, great grandfather Dixon. The colorized photo is marked to a studio in Penrith and later photos I have of him are from Carlisle. I believe he is wearing the everyday uniform of a Yeomanry unit, perhaps the Westmorl...

Re: Swiss Military Wagon
Thankfully, this one is correctly marked as Swiss. You often see these fraudulently advertised as “German”, even though they have no common features with German service wagons. These Swiss wagons were imported in fairly large numbers as were Finnish/Russian Field Artillery Limbers for the 76.2cm M19...

Re: The Centennial of World War One
I don’t think it has already come up in the forum, but there is a WWI Centennial Conference scheduled in Washington DC on 14 June 2014. The commission for the event has a web site at this link http://worldwar-1centennial.org/ At this point I do plan to attend and hope to have a display for the Lovet...

Re: Spahis, World War One.
The first volume of "The French Army" by Stephane Dekerle and Laurent Mirouze has a very good chapter on the Algerian, Tunisian, and Moroccan Spahis in French service in the WW1 era. This chapter goes into great detail about the uniforms and the saddle. I have attached a copy of one of the...

Re: Sword Identification
To me, it looks like a George V Era, British or other Common Wealth 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1897_Pattern_British_Infantry_Officer's_Sword I have one similar to this (without the George V) that was captured from a former Iraqi Baathist Officer in Muhmudiah,...

German WW1 & WW2 10,5cm Howitzer Limber
I have finally gotten together all the parts needed to complete a German 10,5cm lFH 1898/09 (also correct for the model 1916) Limber with help from a of Society of the Military Horse member "Protze". Several years ago I was able to purchase a German 10,5cm lFH 98 Limber box that had a seco...
Re: Winter
Most likely this fellow is a Landsturm man. The Landsturm formations were second line reserve, rather like home guardsmen that were much older than normal service age. The shako was worn by this formation and notice that he is carrying the older GEW 1888 rifle not the more modern GEW 1898 or KAR 189...

Re: Baden Powell. . . artist
I happened to be looking at Baden Powell’s uniform displayed at the British National Army Museum in London not long ago. I was attached to 265 Royal Artillery Battery for the UK/US Officer Exchange and had a chance to see quite a few museums. Photo is attached.
