Re: U.S. Army WWII Pay Scale

Note the item for a private with 30 years service.

You wouldn't see that anymore. . .

The up or out system was a constant source of problems while I was in service....We concidered it an enforced Peters Principle.
In the mid 1960S, the up or out system seems to have applied to Officers only ...

Re: U.S. Army WWII Pay Scale

1942 to 1964 were alike in several ways...... early in wars, WWII and Vietman and the pay of "good ol' Buck" only went up from $50.00 to $69.00. In September I was a Private E-1, newly minted college graduate and off to see the world. Actually, a fellow recuit told me he enlisted for the money! I ...

Re: Die Gebirgstragtiere der Bundeswehr

As we are finding, the horse has never really been completely replaced. Popular histories of WWII tend to declare that the mechanized German Army "crushed" the cavalry of countires like Poland, forever replacing the horse. I now see, thanks to this forum, that all combatants in WWII relied on ...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

Horse manure is excellent fertilizer, with a couple big IFs.
Before applying to your garden take into account:
1- what has the horse been eating.
2- how "decomposed" is the manure
3- did the composting temperature rise high enough to kill any seeds present.

Many years ago, back when we had a ...

Re: Prices at the Dawn of the Gasoline Age, Dusk of the Equine

Some pundits, and the U.S. government, opine that Chrysler is "too small" to survive, and for that reason the government is presiding over a shotgun wedding between Chrysler and Fiat.

Lord have mercy on the institutions and management of Chrysler, if there is a merge with FIAT.
I've been thru it ...

Re: The Military Reindeer

A packsheep maybe, perhaps one of the so called hair sheep, there are several varieties of sheep that do not produce wool as we know it, but rather have hair more like a goat. These hair sheep are more primative that the European ones most of us are acustomed to seeing.
They should be no more ...

Re: Rolling Kitchen

Another version of the rolling kitchen was the "rolling" coffee boiler that was built and tried during the American Civil War. It was, if I recall correctly, operated by the U.S. Sanitary Commission rather than the government. There is a photo of it around, probably published in CIVIL WAR TIMES. I'm ...

Re: Rolling Kitchen

The rolling or field kitchen isn't confined to the military. In 1978, my wife and I took part in a weeklong trail ride in the Black Hills of SD. About 200 riders were involved.
Our meals were provided by a self contained, mobile kitchen, including dining tents. It was all packed in several semi ...

Re: JN-3

As I mentioned earlier, my father-in-law trained in the J3 at U of Montana. Later training was at the RANKIN AERONAUTICAL ACADEMY, Tulare California. I believe they were using the Stearman KAYDET biplane there.

I'm looking at his diploma dated 08 Sept 1944, and it is signed by one Tex Rankin ...

Re: JN-3

It is interesting that the subject of the L4 (also known as PIPER J3) should come up right now.
I am in the process of preparing a display of my father-in-law's belongings from his days as an Aviation Cadet and B-29 pilot during WWII.
One of the the photos I'm using, is of him during early flight ...

The way I heard it from a friend who visted the Czech brewery , is our American brewer started brewing using the the orginal Budweiser formular. This story is the one the Czechs tell American tourists anyway. This bit of legend came to me in the mid 1990s, so it has not an "urban legend" being ...

Re: Rolling Kitchen

I recall reading about and seeing a picture of a rolling "coffee boiler" in use during the American Civil War. I believe it was operated by the U.S. Sanitary Commission rather than the Army.

We were doing "individual ration cooking" as late as 1964. While I was part of a U.S. Army Engineer Field ...

The Gunsmoke radio version was my favorite program on radio. It was a bit different than the TV show in many ways. However, many of the radio scripts were later used on the original 1/2 hour TV show.
On radio:

Mr Brown is an excellent researcher and has plyed his trade well in this book. He used a great deal of primary sources including the writings of men who took part in the Raid and wrote at the time of the events.
