Re: "1805" British light dragoon saddle.
John, Trying to fully understand how the arches are made on this Prussian saddle. Seem quite a complicated profile / section. There wouldn't by any chance be a 3-dimensional drawing available? Digressing and looking back again to Major Tylden's book...and the sketches figs 6, on page 30. These drawi...

Re: "1805" British light dragoon saddle.
Many thanks for your reply, John, and putting up those excellent of the Prussian artillery saddle. This 1842 saddle is more or less how I would expect the early 19th century British wood arch hussar saddle to look. Though I am trying to work out from the illustrations how the loose pilch seat is att...

Re: "1805" British light dragoon saddle.
The "1805" saddle now in the Royal Armouries came from a back room in Jabez Cliffe's premises in Walsall. Major Tylden had deduced it was possibly the only surviving example of the early 19th century wood arch hussars saddle and put a date on it of 1805, and illustrated it in his book..&qu...

"1805" British light dragoon saddle.
While browsing I came across a discussion on a military forum regarding the "1805" saddle on display in the Royal Armouries at Leeds...UK. It had been previously in the possession of the Walsall firm Jabez Cliff for many years. There are photos of it in Major Tylden's book.."Horses an...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. Nice to have a white Christmas, but let's hope for a milder spell, here in the UK, so we can get back on track with our equine activities!.

Re: Merry Christmas!
cheers Sandy...its getting a bit colder. May pop over to the pub for another tot and a chat in front of the fire before turning in!!
Temperatures vary in blighty...colder to the north and east. Being near to the "mighty" river severn we don't get as much snow.

Re: Merry Christmas!
Bright and sunny here today in Gloucestershire. But shivering out with the horses late afternoon..probably about -3degrees C. called into the pub to thaw out in front of the roaring fire with 2 double whiskies. Roads treachourous.
The drinks are just an excuse to avoid ferring kids about!!!

Re: Charge of the Light Brigade -- 1968 movie
This excellent film was directed by Tony Richardson who, unfortunately, was not too concerned with accuracy. I knew I had somewhere an account of the making of the film...and just stumbled upon it. Anyway, aparently the filmed charge was chaotic...all order lost and more like the Grand National. The...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
Another guess could be as follow: in the western saddle, in the piquet (renaissance) saddle and in the "english saddle" along with most "working saddle" you seat actually "on" the bars only separated by rawhide and some stuffing material. On these saddles instead you s...

Yes, interesting David. Linden and Funke presumably a German firm?. And Mole had a German contract?.I am sure this pattern was never on issue to the British Army/.

Re: Killer Viruses III. The Camp Funston Funk
Was chatting to a friend in the pub today...before I read this thread. Flu came up in the conversation as I have just had mine...which should make me safe from 65% of current strains of flu!. He is a mine of accurate and useful information and said that the flu epidemic at the end of WWI was caused ...
