Civil War saddle tree makers tags or plates

Who has seen different ones than these? Until I started digging on these earlier this year, I hadn't heard of Ambler or Condict, so I'm sure there are probably others...

Re: Pattern of 1841 Horse Equipments information

Half considered including Steffen's drawings, however those are just as speculative as anything else. His pommel and cantle shapes are significantly 'off' from typical French designs of the time. I would presume that those should be the most likely candidates.

It's telling that Ringgold and Sumner ...

Re: US Horse Equipment Trials in 1850s

That is what I was coming up with, also.

When, exactly, did the Grimsley’s go out of service and the McClellan go into service as an artillery saddle. Some of the heavy artillery units were still using Grinsley’s as late as 1900. Don’t know where I got that information, though. There are 1890’s ...

Re: US Horse Equipment Trials in 1850s

That's a interesting question - looking at some of the other issued material to Col. Ropes Third Regiment N.G., it looks like they were outfitting a battery as part of the regiment. Perhaps they were referring to the 'artillery' versions, as opposed to the single 'cavalry' saddle, which would be ...

Re: McClellan's Dilemma

The Hungarian Boch saddle in the illustration with McClellan's letter is quite similar to the Prussian saddle of 1864 and the Prussian saddle of 1873. These were used to some extent by German/Prussian cavalry but were much more commonly used by German/Prussian Field Artillery and Trains: https ...

Re: 1st Cavalry Bn, California, CSA?

I recall from earlier google that there was some kind of book about csa spy activity in the Rockies and west. Wonder if a mention of his actions in that kind of readily available source might have inspired someone?

No telling with people - someone made a huge effort to put a govt marker on William ...

Re: Chain halters?

As a bit of additional info - while it seems like they might be talking about 'chain halter leads', references to halters in this time appear to be like those for bridles - where all the parts make up the singular whole. That or they did not issue leads at all...

Here is a comparative statement of ...

Chain halters?

Does anyone have info on the use of 'chain halters' during the antebellum period in US?

I've found repeated references to these being acquired and used by the 1st and 2nd Dragoon Regiments in the 1830s. Other references refer to them being used as a 'anti-theft device' for horses on the frontier...

Re: 1st Cavalry Bn, California, CSA?

Hmm. Ok.

Doesn't really address that an official DOD marker is authorized for said same Confederate veterans, and would be a similar 'labor of love' to arrange for, have delivered, and have installed, perhaps even with a ceremony.

Versus, say, sneaking into remote cemeteries and emplacing ...

Re: CW Artillery standard buckles

This makes sense - there was an Ordnance Board, that finalized their proceedings September 28, 1863. Of the numerous questions posed to it, the "fifth question" was alterations to artillery harness, thereafter referred to for some time as the "new model artillery harness". Here's a snippet ...

Here is the reference to a much better discussion of the Cogent saddle system, which I believe would have countered Capt. Davis' theory had he been able to acquire this source.
