You guys are way out of my league on this, but I find it interesting that the covers have a faux pigskin stamping. I don't recall having seen that before on US military horse furniture.

Re: Horses and WWII Gasoline Rationing
Interesting discussion and statistics on women and labor. On bicycle rationing I would hazard a guess that it was due to the raw materials required to build them, particularly rubber and steel.

Hi, Frank. I read "The Perfect Horse" a year or so ago. And like her previous book "The Eighty Dollar Champion" found it to be well researched, well written, and a joy to read. I highly recommend both. Here's what I had to say about the book in an aside from another thread a coup...

" Hi, Joe. Sorry for the delayed response. I got to reading the book again last night and-I'd forgotten how good it is- couldn't stop turning pages. I can't begin to trace or adequately summarize the many threads that make up the fabric of Letts' story. It would take a whole book and she has al...

Re: Remounts
Yes, Joe. There is an excellent, fairly new, book on this subject: "The Perfect Horse", By Elizabeth Letts. She chronicles the events of the rescue of the Spanish Riding School horses in Vienna- and other breeds, mostly TBs, scattered at studs throughout axis held territories- by a few mem...

Re: Re-print of Chamberlin's Training Hunters, Jumpers, and Hacks.
Wonderful news, Warren. I'm looking forward to the biography. I remember when you first mentioned the project. What, maybe ten years ago? I'm not familiar with Xenophon press, a fitting name though. I can think of at least three three editions, or different publishers, since Eugene Connett's handsom...

Re: The 30th Division in the Querrien Area, October 23 - November 19, 1918
Thanks, Couvi. I didn't know that Philip had a projector that corrected for the change in FPS, so it's a pretty simple fix. It makes me wonder why all films aren't shown at the proper speed. Lately I've seen a lot of early silents on Turner Classic Movies and these are always shown at the correct sp...

Re: The 30th Division in the Querrien Area, October 23 - November 19, 1918
What is Philip's projector magic? Does this have to do with the frames per second? I've often wondered why this isn't compensated for. It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to correct, but perhaps it is. It's interesting that in modern movies that have sections that ape silent era films, e...

Re: Possible Charrette Marocaine (French Army Moroccan Cart)
Hi Ralph, Everything I know about this subject I've learned from this forum and I don't know much. That's a reflection of my slow learning not the the great amount of knowledge that can be gleaned here from you and others. But I do wonder if a military vehicle would have the ornamental features that...

I went to the book store yesterday to order a copy of the new Stalin biography you recommended. It seems there are two new biographies of the man and I couldn't remember the author's name. I assumed that it was the more expensive of the two but wasn't sure so I had to return home put off or a day or...

Re: THE VETERINARY CORPS AND REMOUNT SERVICE
I havent much info on the AEF Vet Corps, but the Australian and British Vet Corps treated approx 2.5m horses in WW1. The Corps were formed after the disgraceful treatment and deaths of so many horses in the Boer War. On this subject It should be noted, more than noted, heralded on high that no sing...

Re: A Fantastic New Book on the Swords and Sabers of the US
Joe, thinking about your post it occurred to me, as it probably has to you, that warpage in a long thin piece of wood would be more likely to happen at a right angle to the flat edge of the stick- just the nature of wood. Not to say that it would be impossible for wood to warp into a saber shape but...
