Thank you for the explanation. IMO this is a very valuable and productive discussion, documenting and illuminating a little-known instance of modern mounted warfare and its evolving doctrine.

That is a very interesting action shot, and one I never saw before. What leapt out at me was the way the carbine was braced across the arm. Was this ever actually done in the field? The first thought that occurred to me was "that muzzle is awfully close to the horse's ears." or perhaps it just looks ...

Welcome to the board, taldozer. Roy Elderkin posts frequently here.

I would add On Horsemanship by Xenophon, from the oldies-but-goodies category.

Also The Caprilli Papers by Federico Caprili.

I hear that parts of "Ran" were shot in West Canada, because of the wide-open spaces and relative availability of horses and experienced riders for the cavalry sequences.

Ah, McFarlane... Being a comics pro, I am not unfamiliar with this enterprise. Todd McFarlane, the master of it all, started out doing comic art and is best known for the "Spawn" character. The detail on these models is generally very good, though the German Shepherd fancier in me figures they could ...

I saw some Haflingers at the local fair last year. Cute, but solidly built. I wouldn't mind having either them or some nice Fjords.

And thanks for the photos!

Those are some great drawings, and weaving that pannier so small must have been a pain on the fingers. I'd love to see the models when those come out. Thanks again!

And what about Hong Kong, which has very little in the way of space or resources but is an economic powerhouse? Culture, ideas and attitude make a ton of difference.

Oh, with all the publicity around this case, I don't know if this oxygen thief will want to show his face around that neighborhood any more. This is one of those times that I regret that public whippings are out of style these days.

With those desert cammies AND the ribbons AND the beret and cigar, (if that's what it is), he looks like some sleazy third-world dictator.

I wouldn't blame the military folks at all if they are manfully fighting an urge to drag him off that horse for some private time in a dark alley.

I agree, the armor with the wings looks pretty awesome, and the psychological effect of seeing these guys coming at you must have been overwhelming.

I think I have to see this movie...

Unusually blunt WWI poster

Nothing like 100% honesty, always a rare quality, though whoever came up with the snappy and memorable "Loose lips sink ships!" would also be worthy of special recognition.
