Pat,
I agree with your assessment of "based on" rather than an adaptation. Also, I couldn't help but think of Eric Bogle's song "The Green Fields of France", which I have read was translated and used as an anti-war song in Germany in the'80's. I wonder if the film makers were familiar with it ...

All Quiet on the Western Front
I watched the new interpretation of "All Quiet on the Western Front" (dubbed into English). To my uneducated eye, uniforms and equipment seemed good, and it seemed realistic. But, if I had seen this without knowing the title, I'm not sure I would have associated it with the book. This version seemed ...

Re: Book on swords and sabers?
Dusan,
Thanks for touching base with me. I had almost forgotten about all this, but was reminded when I had a few things out for cleaning. I couldn't find the emails we exchanged, and could not recall the details.
I certainly look forward to the publication. If you or your publisher need any ...

Book on swords and sabers?
A few years ago we had a thread on US sidearms (it's still around in the archive section). I posted a photo of a saber I have, and some information about it.
A little while later, I was contacted by a Society member about that piece. I can't remember who it was, and I can no longer find the emails ...

Midway movie
I went to see "Midway" the other day, and was impressed with the detail of the CGI. I was also somewhat disappointed by the almost overwhelming reliance on CGI and the CGI colors seemed muted. Overall, though, I thought it was a bit over-acted. I expect the difficulty of trying to act in front of a ...

The Perfect Horse
I just finished reading, and thoroughly enjoying Elizabeth Letts' "The Perfect Horse: The Daring U.S. Mission to Rescue the Priceless Stallions Kidnapped by the Nazis.
Have any of y'all read this one? I'd like to know what you think of it.

I've been looking through the LoC website, and I can't locate this image. Is there some additional identifier that I'm missing?

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old
I was lucky enough to see this recently, and it's one of the most powerful films I've seen.
Now, apparently they missed a cut-off date for something or other, so it's not eligible for an Academy Award for 2018, but because it was released in 2018, it can't be considered for 2019, either. If ever a ...

Title card
I like the new look, and I like the "title card" for this particular section. It's a drawing I shared with the Society some years ago. It is part of a small collection brought home by my grandfather after WW1. He found them in an abandoned farmhouse in France. There are a couple that are military in ...

Re: What are you reading?
I've been drifting through Bernard Cornwell's Saxon stories. It's my first taste of his writing, and while I can't comment on the historicity, I've enjoyed it so far.
Also, I'm reading "On the Border with Crook", by John Bourke and "Three Years Among the Comanches" by Nelson Lee. I have these on my ...
