Music CD: Corb Lund, Horse Soldier
Corb Lund is a canadian country western / folk singer. He sings about horses, ranching and life in the Canadian west. He also is interested in military history and has an album out a bit over a year now entitled Horse Soldier Horse Soldier. The title track is an interesting and enjoyable synaposis o...

Re: Valkyrie, 12/28/'08
Pat, You've done the most looking at the history. What books do you recommend? Note: Philipp Boeslegar has a brand new book out on his experiences in May: Valkyrie by Philip Freiher Von Boeselager, Florence Fehrenbach, Jerome Fehrenbach, and Steven Rendall (Hardcover - May 12, 2009). http://www.amaz...

I drive by it three or four times a day and I didn't think of posting a pic. Certainly one of the best cavalry monuments in the U.S. http://www.kansastravel.org/05fortleavenworth1.JPG http://www.hoperider.org/HopeRiderBlog/images/Day_Four_Pixs_--_Buffalo_Soldier_Monument.jpg http://www.travelks.com/...

Re: Valkyrie, 12/28/'08
Totally agree Pat. Everyone remarked on the uniforms. Another note was the very obvious differences in quality of the custom made officer uniforms from those of the other ranks in every scene. Anyone who has seen the real thing knows this, but it is one of the many details, like the ribbon loops, an...

Re: Valkyrie, 12/28/'08
Saw the movie today with a group of 20+ professional military historians. I'll start by saying I am NOT a Tom Cruise fan. But....Pretty much the unanimous view was that it was well made, authentic, and enjoyable. Well worth your movie $. A word of caution however, this movie is history, so we were i...

Re: Can anybody recommend books on. . .
Back to the original question... I think the tread covers pretty much what is generally available on the punitive expedition. On the Philippine Insurecction Brian McAllister is the main source, in additon to the Philippine War already mentioned, is his "U.S Army Counterinsurgency in the Philipp...

Re: Upcoming Truscott biography
I haven't got a copy, but the review on amazon are very very bad. Truscott is a very complex individual who operated mostly in theaters where success and failure were not easily measured. It would really take a very good bio to capture the true Truscott.

Re: War Horse by Louis A. DiMarco
The photo selection process was largely a function of budget. In my case my budget was limited to almost 0 so I was limited to copy-right free photos. At first I thought that with no budget I would have a hard time illustrating the book but as it turned out, with the assistance of the internet, I wa...

Re: Odyssey of a Philippine Scout
I read the draft of the book before publishing and thought it was an interesting and engaging story --that was almost two years ago so my memory is a little thin. The publishers were really focused on putting out a good project but were hampered by the untimely passing of several of the individuals ...

One of my favorites and not just because of John Ford (I'm USMA 81). I've had one too many and stumbled about in several of the places depicted in the movie ;) This is an interesting link to the writing of the book "Bringing up the Brass" upon which the movie was based: http://www.aogusma....

Re: War Horse by Louis A. DiMarco
Pat, The short answer to your question is yes. Though not the focus of the article on torture, I have looked closely at the French intelligence system set up in Algeria, French counterinsurgency concepts at the time, very closely at the biographies of key French commanders (which are very interestin...

Re: War Horse by Louis A. DiMarco
Sandy, Glad to hear you're enjoying the book. I think your comments on the use of the exterior horses on the ancient battle wagons is worth considering. I believe that no definitive purpose has been determined for the non-pulling horses is partly because we don't know much about the tactics and empl...

Re: War Horse by Louis A. DiMarco
That would be great if it happened. I think the way that works, however, is the military book club decides what books it wants to carry and then makes a deal with the publisher. If you're a member and want to see the book offered you could send a note to the club editor.

For now I'm focused on academics... and building an arena on the property. Still, eventually my academics will become a book length project on U.S. Army occupation operations begining after the Civil War through post WWII Germany and Japan. My thesis is that, unlike recent Army leadership, the WWII ...

Pat...and anyone else that is interested, All of the major book chains are carrying the book: Borders, Barnes and Noble, Waldens, etc. That said, they don't distribute the book to every store. In my local area (Kansas CIty) only one of the 5 borders carries it --they have an online inventory you can...

Sandy, Great article! I found numerous references to Lucas as I did my research and was very happy to get the picture I used in the book. I think one of the most fun, interesting, and surprising portions of the book was the chapter on the steppe warriors. I think the book supports the point that the...
