Prior to WW2 Washington was a small southern city. FL Ave was basically the city limits with rural land beyond. Many gov workers and army officers had estates nearby and took a short commute to work. The National Cemetery in Chattanooga has an impressive memorial to the Andrew's Raiders who participated in the Great Locomotive Chase of the General by the Texas.
