Re: The South African Defence Force and Horse Mounted Infantry Operations, 1974 - 1985

German cavalryman shooting

http://dailylifestyle.com/rare-never-se ... hotos/29/I have never seen anyone shoot like this but is showing me that the horse is very well trained and the rider has great balance, but It makes me wonder how else was a cavalry trooper from that era trained.

Re: NWP Stock Saddle Accessories; Mounties basic load.

I agree that is very interesting (there mission and working alone seems like how history has viewed the Texas Rangers and the AZ rangers more than the US Cavalry.) and I will disagree slightly about the Winchester not making a good military rifle, since the Turks used them to defeat the Russians in ...

Re: Horse dependancy=Rail dependancy=Air vulernability

There were some areas where a few horsemen would have come in handy for various reason, and if I am not mistaken the idea of bringing back the horse cavalry was thought about for fighting the Japs in some areas of China if it came to that. Patton is quoted as saying that in North Africa if he had a ...

Re: Horse dependancy=Rail dependancy=Air vulernability

Another point to add to that is how the Germans were always short of fuel and needing more oil. That might have had part of the reason why they used draft horses as late as they did.

Re: Saber training

Thank you for your information and it makes perfect sense. I am guess to introduce a horse to the baton/ saber; you start using the weapon from the ground so the horse can see and hear the movements before trying it from the horses's back. That is the main idea I can think of.

Re: Boer Riding Style

Hi Pat The Boers had no riding style as such. But what they could be refered to has an easy style of riding. They were basicly farmers therefore not military trained. But their knowledge of riding was based on a life time of horsemanship, rather like the western horseman and Australian. They would ...
