the Artillery Horse “Rodney”

Happened to see the film “Keep ‘Em Rolling” yesterday on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Below is a synopsis of the film and other information. Also I found some information on the Artillery Horse “Rodney” which I’ve included. Some disconnects between the movie and the FA Journal (WWI in the movie vs. ...

Re: US Cav Photo - 1912 Experimental Equipment

I did a search of “W.H. Horne Co, El Paso, Texas, USA” and found several sites with his photographs. Apparently he was a photographer and perhaps also had a post card company in El Paso during the Punitive Expedition time period. The El Paso Public Library has a collection of some 619 photos by Mr. ...

Knights (and Cameleers) vs. Teamsters

Came across this interesting story. http://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/driving-on-the-left/ History and origin About 35% of the world population drives on the left, and the countries that do are mostly old British colonies. This strange quirk perplexes the rest of the world; but there is a perfectly ...

I don’t suspect this reference will answer the question however it appears to be a good reference for specific US Cavalry units.

Re: The "Cavalry Controversy"

I attended a lecture last weekend at the Five Forks Battlefield and the National Park Ranger who was discussing the American Civil War horse cavalry made the point that the majority of battles involving the cavalry were dismounted. He made the point that the horses were too valuable for them to be w...

Yes, I saw that and some other comments. I was going to write that he was an interesting man with some faults, as we all have, but I left the fault part out. Then again he may simply have been a man of his time. I also came across this, which was to his credit. In June, at a meeting of the Executive...

Gen. Charles Hitchcock Sherrill, appears to be an interesting fellow and sat a horse nicely. Recommend reading the obit and information at the two links. "In 1916 he organized and was grand marshal of the preparedness parade …" http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wynkoop/webd...

It would be nice if the two museums could link up their exhibits. General Grant’s saddle is in the Army Quartermaster Museum.

The Great War (BBC 1964) Just finished watching the 26 episode series of World War I broadcast by the BBC in 1964. Each episode runs for 40 minutes. Excellent historical films, still photos, narrations, and comments by veterans. I was surprised how young (middle aged) the veterans looked but then I ...

Secret mission: The Horse Soldiers of 9/11

Interview with some of the horse soldiers of 9/11. It was the news the world breathlessly waited for immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks: a report of the first American troops on the ground in Afghanistan. All at once the world’s attention focused on an iconic photo of those Special Operations...
