Re: WWI Era Australian (British?) Artillery harness question
Roy, thanks for the observation, good to know. These alloy tins were not with the harness set, at the moment the harness is stored in an army caserne near Antwerp. Yes the set on the photo is indeed for the near side wheeler. Here are some recent photos of the Kings Troop, taken last year during a v...

Re: WWI Era Australian (British?) Artillery harness question
This is a not a Belgian variation, the Belgian army never used the British style harness, it is a British made one that came some 30 years ago to the museum, it is a complete 6 horse set in two metal transport boxes. Because it is brand new, it can now be used has a back up set for the 1914 commemor...

Re: WWI Era Australian (British?) Artillery harness question
Here is a photo showing the short leather strap and the quick release. (It is from a serie of photos, with some uniformed figurants, I took two years ago showing part of the harness that was loaned out by the Brussels army museum.) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/802/rt70.jpg regards, Jan

Re: Battlefield Horse Carcasses
On the roads leading out Haelen towards the battlefield, the Belgian army build some improvised barrikades made of cut down trees and carts, these photos were taken the day after the battle, dead German cavalry horses still lying there. The Belgian soldiers are from the Guides Brigade, they did not ...

Re: British Enlisted Pocket Knife
These Pocket Knifes were also made for the Belgian army by COLIN WINAND, most have 1951 dates, and the armys ABL marking. These are together with the lanyards still issued today on every new recruit. Cold war stock, they must have huge piles of these in store. I like the knife, it is basic, compact ...

Several bend German steel lances can also been seen on the first photo, that part of the battlefield is still much the same today. "The one source I read claimed that the M1943 pattern was based on a German e-tool, but every WWII German e-tool I've ever seen a photo of was simply a very short spade with a somewhat square blade. These do not fold. That pattern was carried on, like many WWII German patterns, into post war Ea...

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
Hi Lookas, the only documentation I have now is this description in the H.Dv.476/2 from 1936, these behälter were no longer in use during the second war. It looks the same or at least very similar as on the color drawing. These are now very rare items, I never seen one, these must all be cut and the...

Lookas wrote:I look on picture of private and i try to recognize...what is this box (or...hmmmm...barrel??) after the sabre??
Ist this a gassmask pack?? In 1901??
I think that this is the "Kochengeschirrbehälter", a leather carrying pouch for the mess tin.

Re: Armeesattels before the 25
The cut out on the helmet above the ear was retained in the WWI helmet for the Cavalry. Tom Why was that? Does it serve a function on the M16 helmet? Production of this model with the cut out above the ears was started in the summer of 1918, around 180 000 were produced before the end of WW 1, rela...

Yes Pat, this is the name of this pullover tunic, based on a older traditional Russian design

Re: WW 2 Sovjet Cavalry
The photo of the machine gun troop is certainly wartime, the tunic that they wear is the model 1943 gymnastiorka, with standing collar and epaulettes. The previous model 1935 had a flat collar with insignia on and no epaulettes.
